On Monday March 4, 2013 the Jackson County Board of Commissioners voted to officially adopt a new flag for Jackson County. As one of the last counties in the state of North Carolina without a flag, the county commissioners sent out a request for submissions from Jackson County Schools, Western Carolina University, and Southwestern Community College. Three SCC students who submitted their designs for consideration were named as finalists, and the winning design was created by SCC student, Jessica Waldron. The other SCC finalists were Alyssa Barnes and Jana Thompson. All three students are in the Advertising & Graphic Design Program at SCC.
