The Jackson County Board of Education has re-appointed Elizabeth “Libby” Knight to Southwestern Community College’s Board of Trustees.

Knight has served on the board of trustees since 2010.

“During my tenure as a trustee, I have found SCC to be the place that constantly strives to meet the needs of communities they serve as well as those of the students,” Knight said. “I believe all the SCC trustees have a common interest in helping SCC continue to be the best and I’m pleased to serve with this dedicated group.

Knight spent 32 years in the Jackson County School system as a teacher, lead teacher and administrator before retiring in 2001.

She is a native of Jackson County and resides in Dillsboro with her husband, Ray.

“Being a career educator in Jackson County has given me many opportunities to observe how vital Southwestern Community College is to Jackson, Swain, and Macon counties,” Knight said. “Its presence has provided young people and adults the option to further their educations while still holding jobs and managing families.

SCC continually strives to meet the educational needs of the areas it serves.

“Programs continue to be implemented according to the needs of its service area,” Knight added. “SCC gives students the advantage and the opportunity to immediately enter the work force or to continue at institutions of higher learning.”

Knight’s current term as a trustee expires on June 30, 2019.

“Our institution is extremely fortunate that Mrs. Knight is a member of our board of trustees, and I’m delighted that she has been re-appointed,” said Dr. Don Tomas, president of SCC. “As we develop our master plan for the next 10 years and beyond, it is vital that our board include voices of leaders who devoted their careers to education as Mrs. Knight has done.”

Southwestern, which WalletHub ranks among the Top 10 community colleges in the nation, serves Jackson, Macon, Swain Counties and the Qualla Boundary. For more information about SCC and the programs it offers, visit www.southwesterncc.edu  or call828.339.4000.
