“If you can change a classroom, you can change a community, and if you change enough communities you can change the world,” said Erin Gruwell, teacher and award-winning novelist of “The Freedom Writers Diary”.

Southwestern Community College’s chapter of National Society for Leadership and Success adhered to Gruwell’s words by awarding a cash prize to Seth Tate,NSLS member and fundraising chair, to encourage him to be the change in his community.

“National Society for Leadership and Success students show commitment to the community, such as Seth Tate, and will continue to work with community service and outreach,” said Fairley Pollock, student services coordinator of the Macon Campus.

Seth Tate was awarded $1,000 by NSLS for the purposes of renovating the bathrooms at Christian Love Ministries, in Murphy. Seth Tate worked closely with Christian Love Ministries as a volunteer before winning the NSLS award. Christian Love Ministries is a Christian-based residential drug and alcohol treatment program for men of the community. The ministry needed a clean safe bathroom for their residents. Seth Tate along with two other NSLS volunteers; Nathan Olson and Carrie Stratton remodeled the entire mens bathroom. The renovation began in December 2014 and was recently finished at the end of March.

“Our students define themselves as leaders and gain a sense of accomplishment and overwhelming gratitude for outreach,”  said Fairley Pollock.

The National Society for Leadership and Success is an organization that helps students achieve their goals. Members of the chapter of Southwestern Community College members are challenged to think about their role as leaders in Success Networking Team assignments with the desire to make a lasting impact on their communities. It inspires students to grow as individuals of action; bettering their campus and local communities in the process.
