SCC Personal Enrichment Classes

INSTANT PIANO FOR HOPELESSLY BUSY PEOPLE
Learn to play the piano the way the pros do in Southwestern Community College’s Instant Piano for Hopelessly Busy People class. It will be held Saturday, Feb. 4, from 9 a.m. to noon on the Jackson Campus. Participants will learn by the method demonstrated on Good Morning America. The $75 registration fee includes workbook, handouts and 60 minute practice CD. The instructor is Deborah Belcher. To register, call 339-4497.          

 

INTERMEDIATE SPINNING

Improve on basic spinning and learn new techniques for single / double plied yarns in Southwestern Community College’s Intermediate Spinning class. It will be held Thursdays on the Jackson Campus from 6-8 p.m. Feb. 9-23. It’s anticipated students will complete two spun bobbins in the class , plying with glitter thread and crazy plying with embellishment yarns.   Prerequisite to course is knowledge in basic spinning or completion of SCC’s basic spinning class. A spinning wheel will be provided for use during the three weeks. The cost is $100, which includes materials. To register, call 339-4497.

 

 

FIGHT LIKE A GIRL

Southwestern Community College will once again offer the popular Fight Like A Girl course. It is centered on the "Stay with People" principle and covers the most common sexual assault scenarios.  The course will be held Saturday, Feb. 11, from 9 a.m. to noon on the Jackson Campus and cost $30. This module is especially effective for dealing with attacks in parking lots and garages where victims could be transported to a secondary location. Students learn to escape the dreaded and deadly "blitz" attack from behind as well as how to defend their space. To register, call 339-4497.

 

FINE WOODWORKING- Handtools I
Brian Bartel, a master woodcrafter from Sylva, will lead a variety of classes for those who would like to learn the art of fine woodworking. The first scheduled class is Hand Tools I, which will be held at Southwestern Community College’s Jackson Campus starting Tuesday, Feb. 13. It will be held from 6-8 p.m. on subsequent Tuesdays through March 5. In this basic course on the use and maintenance of the basic tools, participants will learn to identify, sharpen and use a variety of chisels, planes, scrapers and handsaws. Bartel said participants will discover that all of these tools can be obtained rather inexpensively. This course is designed for a small group and will offer lots of hands-on attention. ELEMENTARY COMPUTER BASICS or “How do I turn this darn thing on?”
A very basic course in elementary computer will be taught at Southwestern Community College’s Cashier Center from 10 a.m. to noon Mondays Feb. 13-March 5. Called How Do I Tun This Darn Thing On?, the course teaches students the various workings of a computer, how to use of the internet and how to set up an e-mail account. It is a short course that can be later continued on a higher level. This class is small so that individual attention is possible, according to instructor Michael Rich . MODERN QUILTING TECHNIQUES

Local fabric artist Valerie Halvorson will introduce basics for modern quilting in Southwestern Community College’s Modern Quilting Techniques class.  The class will be held 2-4 p.m. Wednesdays at the Cashiers Center beginning Feb. 15 and running through Feb. 22. Halvorson will demonstrate paper piecing with fabric, tubing, making points for stars, fancy patterns and continuous pleats and more.  Learn some valuable skills to make wearable art.
