Seven students graduated from Southwestern Community College’s Project SEARCH® program on May 26 at Harris Regional Hospital.

Project SEARCH® is a national non-profit program which partners with businesses to create internships for young adults with disabilities.

Graduates included Jon Davis of Sylva, Corey Hambrick of Sylva, Casey Holscher of Bryson City, Katherine Lancaster of Cullowhee, Cheyanne Ray of Franklin, Robbie Wagner of Whittier and Tammy Woodring of Sylva.

SCC’s partners in providing the program locally include Harris Regional Hospital, Smoky Mountain Center, Vocational Rehabilitation and Webster Enterprises.

During the ceremony, all graduates expressed gratitude for the hope Project SEARCH® has brought into their lives.

Students in Project SEARCH® spend part of their time taking classes that prepare them for finding and maintaining employment, and each student also worked internships in a variety of departments at Harris Regional.

It was the second class that Devonne Jimison, SCC’s Project SEARCH® instructor, has overseen.

“These interns have been wonderful to work with,” Jimison said. “Seeing how far they’ve come in one year has really touched my heart. I am proud of every one of them, and I am excited to watch them start the next chapter in their lives. Employers who need capable, responsible workers will be very lucky to have them.”

Jimison is currently recruiting for the 2016-17 Project SEARCH® class. Potential students and their families/friends can contact Jimison for more info: 828.339.4486 or devonnej@southwesterncc.edu. Employers seeking reliable employees from the Project SEARCH® program can also contact her.
