SCC student starts podcast project to speak out on recovery

2018-06-14

Everyone loves a great comeback story, and Stephen Steen is no exception.

A student in the Substance Abuse Treatment program at Southwestern Community College, Steen recently paired his passion for helping those in recovery, with his dream of a career in talk radio to launch his new podcast called NC Recovery All Ways (NC RAW).
“I wanted to create a safe space for conversations about recovery,” said Steen, who has been personally affected by substance abuse. “NC RAW is working to create a culture in our local community that recognizes all pathways to recovery, from traditional, to innovative.”

Along with Steen, co-host Kallup McCoy and producer Courtney Stiwalt are members of the NC RAW team. They were able to record their first episode on Feb. 5 and started recording weekly after the spring semester at SCC ended. NC Raw has hosted a variety of local guests on the show since it began.

Although the show has just begun, it has already gained a following. The podcast recently achieved 15% of a new fundraising goal in the first two hours of being live. However, if the project is not fully funded by June 28, the podcast will come to an end.
Funding would go towards the NC RAW team purchasing recording equipment, as they are currently using the studio on Western Carolina University’s campus.

Long term, their dream is to monetize the show through sponsorships and eventually open a non-profit community center where those in recovery can come and find support.
