SCC Student of the Week Mar Orr

To honor some of our most tenacious students, our Student Recognition Retention Action Team has started a “Student of the Week” award.

Faculty members nominate students based on their tenacity, and the team selects one per week.

Congratulations to Mark Orr, who's been named our "Student of the Week!"

Name: Mark Orr
Program: Respiratory Therapy
Graduation: 5/12/ 2018

What motivates you to continue and excel at SCC in spite of circumstances you may face?
As a respiratory therapist student, I have always had passion to help others in need. I began my medical training as an EMT on my local rescue squad. I had decided that I wanted to explore my options in the medical field outside EMS.  After my mother passed away from aspiration pneumonia, I realized the important role that respiratory therapists play in patient care. In order to care for patients in similar situation like my mother, respiratory therapy was the direction that I needed to pursue.

What advice would you give to future students who might face similar situations?
Figure out what you are passionate about, or something that you would enjoy doing for work even if you were not paid. Once you can define what truly intrigue you, then motivation will follow.  Gaining the knowledge to be able do what you are passionate about may not be the easiest task. When you find yourself struggling, think about the end goal that you want to achieve. Don’t become discouraged if you don’t succeed the first time.  You usually learn more from an experience that you didn't succeed at the first time.  Don’t forget to ask for help when you need it. It is a sign of strength, not a weakness.
