A young woman in a navy sweater smiles in a selfie. Our student of the week is Bre Figgs! She is expected to graduate this summer from the Business Administration program. Bre will also be working on completing the Associate in Arts program before transferring to a university.

We asked Bre a few questions about herself and what inspires her:

Who is one of your role models? How has that person helped with your educational journey?
I am my own role model. My educational journey has been full of ups and downs. Through it all, I have remembered that God will never give me more than I can handle. Staying focused on the future has encouraged me to keep fighting every day.

What motivates you to excel at SCC in spite of difficult circumstances you may face?
My faith in God is what motivates me to excel, despite the difficult circumstances I have faced and continue to face. I had four deaths in my family last year. My cousin passed way suddenly, and a month later my uncle passed away. After my dad died in 2003, my uncle became my second dad. I was so close to him so, I am devastated by his loss. The next morning after my uncle passed away, one of my aunts passed away. A month after that, the wife of the uncle I mentioned previously passed away. Despite all of these painful experiences, I still managed to get all A's in school. I focused on providing a better future for myself. I even completed an internship for the U.S. Forest Service in South Jordan/Salt Lake City, Utah (Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest). The best thing I did for myself was not drown in my grief.

What advice would you give to other students who face tough challenges?
I would tell them to remember they are not alone. I would beg them not to make the mistake of giving up because of the things people say. I would tell them to seek advice from someone who has also faced tough challenges. They may have tips that would help. I would encourage them to keep their distance from negative people, no matter who it is. Last, but not least, they should always remember the importance of self-motivation and use it.

We are so proud of everything you have accomplished so far, Bre. We wish you all the success in the world!
