Student of the week: Christi Castro

2019-11-12

Young woman standing in sonography scrubsOur student of the week is Christi Castro! She will be graduating in May 2020 with an Associate of Applied Science in Medical Sonography.

We asked Christi a few questions about herself and what inspires her:

Who is one of your role models? How has that person helped with your educational journey?
My role model is my sister, Savannah Tipton. She is five years older than me and my best friend. Even though we both live extremely busy lives, we still find time to catch up and push each other to strive for more in life.My sister helped raise me when we were little, and I look up to her without a doubt. After many hardships in our lives, health concerns, and the birth of three beautiful children, my sister decided it was time to go back to school and follow her dreams of becoming a teacher. Savannah worked a full-time job with three children and went to school full time. She is now a 3rd grade teacher in Buncombe County, and with no question, she is making a difference in the community. I have witnessed this first-hand with assisting her in her classroom for a day. My sister makes me want to strive to not only make an impact in our community, but to genuinely love my career, and be the best sonographer I can be. She encourages me to work hard for what I want in life, and she is proof that I will not only succeed, but I will persevere.

What motivates you to excel at SCC in spite of difficult circumstances you may face?
Knowing the impact I am making on the community is what motivates me to excel at SCC in spite of difficult circumstances. I was forced to grow up at a very young age, so I completely understand those who are less fortunate, and those who cannot afford healthcare. In my career as a sonographer, I scan patients who come in with illnesses and pain. If I can not adequately perform these exams, there is a possibility of misdiagnosis, causing the patient more pain, or even death. I want to be the one who makes a difference in someone’s life, for the better. I want to help people, even if it means just sitting there and listening to them. Sometimes, people just need someone to listen.

What advice would you give to other students who face tough challenges?
For any student facing tough challenges in life, “this too shall pass.” Remember this and find your passion. Do not stop until you are passionate about what you want out of life. I am 30 years old, and going back to school to follow my dreams, so it is never too late to start over with a clean slate. Do not be afraid of what life has in store for you, and never, ever be afraid to seek help. More people care and are willing to help you than you may think.

Congratulations, Christi! We are so proud to have you as a student.
