Student of the Week: Justin Clifton

2018-02-26
SCC Student of the Week Justin Clifton.

To honor some of our most tenacious students, our Student Recognition Retention Action Team has started a “Student of the Week” award.

Faculty members nominate students based on their tenacity, and the team selects one per week.

Congratulations to Justin Clifton, who's been named our "Student of the Week!"

What motivates you to continue and excel at SCC in spite of circumstances you may face?
No matter what I'm going through, I always try to look to the future with a positive mindset. Abraham Lincoln once said " In this sad world of ours sorrow comes to all and it often comes with bitter agony. Perfect relief is not possible except with time. You cannot now believe that you will ever feel better. But this is not true. You are sure to be happy again. Knowing this, truly believing it will make you less miserable now. I have had enough experience to make this statement". I try to live by this advice every day. Sometimes it's difficult, but thankfully I've been blessed to have a wonderful support group. Without my friends, mentors, and teachers, I would have given up a long time ago.

What advice would you give to future students who might face similar situations?
Get out there and find your support group! Be involved in the community. Life is far too difficult for one person to carry all the weight. If you need to talk to someone, SCC is filled with amazing people who care. Never forget, "Anyone who has ever been able to sustain good work has had at least one person--and often many--who have believed in him or her. We just don't get to be competent human beings without a lot of different investments from others". - Fred Rogers
