Students in Southwestern Community College’s social media marketing class recently collaborated with local business co-owner Ben King of Bryson City Outdoors for a virtual conversation applying their classroom learning to King’s real-life experience promoting his business.

“This project is a good example of how we can collaborate with members of our business community to enhance student learning,” said Carolyn Porter, SCC’s business department chair and program coordinator for business administration and electronic commerce. “The video discussion board we used brought the discussion to life for our online students.”

The students in the online course created a web-based slide show of video questions about King’s social media marketing practices for Bryson City Outdoors. King then made his recorded responses to the questions for a virtual discussion.

“This program is a great asset for those interested in, or who are currently involved in the business world,” said King. “Each day technology and business operations are only becoming more and more intertwined, especially with how we engage with customers before and after they make a purchase. Realizing the impacts of social interaction and online marketing early on can get every business started off on the right foot."

The social media marketing course is part of the business administration – electronic commerce degree. The program includes courses in electronic commerce principles and strategy, web graphics, basic web site design, as well as a broad foundation of general business courses. All courses required for the degree can be completed online.
