Sylva woman achieves goal of earning high school equivalency diploma

Pictured is Lisa Pruett of Sylva, who recently accomplished her goal of earning her high school equivalency diploma at Southwestern Community College.

Before Lisa Pruett earned her high school equivalency diploma at Southwestern Community College in 2016, she already had a happily busy life: marriage, children, running a successful business with her husband and becoming a grandmother- just to name a few.

Even so, she had a goal that she wanted to accomplish: earn her high school equivalency diploma.

“I kept giving myself a start time. I had even tried once before when I was 19 to get my diploma, but in 2014, I finally started and finished up in 2016,” said Pruett. “Both of my daughters are teachers, and this was my way of honoring them for working so hard.”

Pruett credits SCC instructors and her family for helping her on her journey.

“Lisa was a very conscientious student, she worked very hard,” said Cynthia Burke, adjunct instructor in SCC’s educational opportunities program. “She became the ‘room mother’ to the other students in the program and was always so encouraging to them.”

Pruett is very happy that she can now tell her grandson she finished high school, and share with him the importance of education.

“Definitely get your high school equivalency diploma. It is very important, and it raises your self-esteem,” said Pruett. “You can always achieve something if you want to.”
