Southwestern Community College’s therapeutic massage program is making history in 2017.

For the first time, the program will offer a two-year, Associate in Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree option that will be offered starting this fall.

“This is a great way for students to really absorb the material and become more employable for higher end positions,” said Jennifer Burgess, SCC’s therapeutic massage instructor. “This also gives students a chance to do more community outreach programs.”

The degree program will give students the ability to do outcome based massage, which is therapeutic massage that allows a person to see positive change in the body from continual massage therapy.

With the out based education students receive, they’ll be able to do job shadowing and internships at area spas.

Since therapeutic massage was introduced at SCC in 2007, the program has only offered a one-year diploma.

“Having the two-year associate degree will be a big benefit, I was the first one to sign up!” said Brenda Lopez, a current SCC therapeutic massage student. “This will allow me to further my education and have the experience that spas look for when hiring.”

After their second semester, students can take their licensing exam so they can work towards being licensed with no downtime in the spring and summer months.

“This is an awesome opportunity for us to get more hands-on experience and more education,” said Katlyn Eddings, current SCC therapeutic massage student.

The deadline for applying to the program for the fall semester is April 25, but seats will remain open until filled.

The therapeutic massage program will also be offering a continuing education course for licensed massage therapists on Saturday, April 22. That class will focus on ethics and deep tissue techniques.
