Katharine Murray, a participant in Southwestern Community College’s Upward Bound program, has received a Pinnacle Scholar Award of Excellence from Berea College in Kentucky.

Berea College in Kentucky has given Katharine Murray, a Swain High School senior and a participant in Southwestern Community College’s Upward Bound program, a Pinnacle Scholar Award of Excellence.

The award is presented annually to high school seniors in order to celebrate their academic and extracurricular accomplishments. Murray was honored at a full-day event on Nov. 21 at Berea College.

Winners demonstrate significant accomplishments in either science, music or service. Murray’s award was based on her service within her community. As current president of the Interact Club at Swain High, she is able to coordinate both resources and members to become involved in projects impacting the area. Individually, Murray’s service is multifaceted, impacting elders, animals and children through both hands-on service and advocacy.

Murray’s long-term goal is to work with youth, both nationally and internationally.

“Katharine works tirelessly to help those around her,” said Annette Kesgen, director of SCC’s Upward Bound program. “It’s rare for someone so young to have such maturity.”
