Sometimes a simple thank you or a small gift makes all the difference to someone.

That is why high school students from throughout Southwestern Community College’s service area gave their time to be a part of two service projects last month.

“Our students had a lot of fun performing these projects,” said Annette Kesgen, director of SCC’s Upward Bound program. “It’s really quite impressive to see these young people who already grasp the value of serving others, looking out for our neighbors and showing gratitude to the men and women in uniform who keep us safe.”

The first project these students in SCC’s Upward Bound program participated in was making thank you cards that were sent to local firefighters.

The second project was wrapping small toiletry items that were donated to the Jackson County Department of Aging. This was part of the annual holiday drive for local elders.

Upward Bound is a college preparatory program funded by the United States Department of Education as a TRIO program. It is designed to encourage academic success in high-potential students.

This program serves students from Cherokee, Franklin, Smoky Mountain and Swain High Schools.
