POLICIES & PROCEDURES FOR EMPLOYEES

Southwestern Community College - Policies and Procedures Manual
Policy Title: Workload - Staff 4.15
Responsible Division: Administrative Services
Date Approved: October 2009

1. Exempt Personnel
a. Administrative offices of the college are open for business hours from 8 am to 5 pm, Monday through Thursday and 8 am – 12 Noon on Friday. Other hours of operation may exist in order to meet customer needs.
b. Exempt employees are also required to perform work over and above the standard 40 hour work week when such duty is determined to be in the best interest of the college.
c. Exempt employees will be assigned a work schedule which establishes a 40 hour work week to meet the schedule of the college and may also be required to perform duties over and above a 40 hour work week.
2. Non-Exempt Personnel
a. Employees of the college who are classified as non-exempt will be assigned a standard 40 hour work week, in writing, by the immediate supervisor. The immediate supervisor will keep a copy of the assignment and one copy will be filed in the employee's personnel file.
b. The college will not pay overtime compensation to non-exempt employees who work in excess of 40 hours per week.
c. If it is necessary for an employee to work over 40 hours per week, the FLSA requires one and one-half hours of compensatory time be granted for each hour of overtime worked. Compensatory time must be taken within 30 days from the date the overtime was performed or by the end of the following pay period. Compensatory time off should be coordinated with the employee's supervisor.
d. The length of the meal break will be determined and scheduled by the supervisor. Meal breaks will not normally be scheduled at the beginning of the shift to delay the reporting time or at the end of the shift to shorten the shift. If a meal break is scheduled supervisors are to ensure that employees are completely relieved from assigned work and the break is at least 30 uninterrupted minutes.
3. Part-Time Personnel
a. Part-time employees may not work in excess of 25 hours per week, unless there are special circumstances for a short duration (one academic term or less).
