Procedure Title: Material in the Personnel File 4.30.1

  Personnel files are established by the college and are the property of the college. Personnel files are confidential and are only subject to inspection as authorized under G.S. 115D (27-29).
1. An employee who objects to material in his or her personnel file may place in the file a statement relating to the material considered to be inaccurate, misleading, or otherwise objectionable to the employee.
2. An employee may request to have certificates, letters of commendation, or other documents related to employment placed in his or her personnel file.
3. Material placed in the personnel file is generally deemed to be retained as a permanent component of the personnel file. However, an employee may appeal to have material removed from the file if considered to be inaccurate, misleading, irrelevant, or otherwise objectionable to the employee. Refer to Employee Grievance Procedure 4.23.1.
4. An employee has the right to inspect his or her own file with the exception of letters of reference solicited prior to employment. An employee may request to inspect the contents of the personnel file during normal office hours.
