Southwestern Community College - Policies and Procedures Manual
Procedure Title: Procedure for Establishing a New Curriculum 5.6.1
Responsible Division: Instruction and Student Services  
Date Approved: April 2001  
 
   
1. Instructional Services assesses curriculum needs through environmental scans, surveys, requests, etc.
2. Curriculum feasibility is discussed with North Carolina Community College System staff.
3. Curriculum outline is prepared by college staff.
4. Curriculum outline and justification of need is presented to college Curriculum and Instruction Committee and then to the Board of Trustees Curriculum and Educational Support Committee, which in turns presents the curriculum feasibility to the Board of Trustees.
5. Board of Trustees approves the offering of the curriculum.
6. Detailed curriculum proposal and application developed by college staff.
7. Application is submitted to the North Carolina Community College System.
8. North Carolina Community College System submits application to the State Board of Community Colleges.
9. Key industry personnel and/or an ad hoc committee may be used during the planning process and upon program approval an advisory committee is formed.
10. Curriculum initiated and assigned to appropriate division.
a. Student Development markets and recruits for the curriculum
b. Instructional Services provides staff, equipment, physical facilities, etc.
c. Curriculum becomes operational
