| The North Carolina
Basic Law Enforcement Training
is a State accredited program
designed to prepare entry level
individuals with the cognitive
and physical skills to become
certified police officers and
deputy sheriff’s. The course
is comprised of thirty-five separate
blocks of instruction. The Commission
mandated course, upon completion,
will enable the graduate to be
certified to work as a sworn law
enforcement officer in the State
of North Carolina.
The day sessions typically meet
from 8:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m.,
Monday through Friday, with some
evenings and Saturdays required.
The evening sessions typically
meet 6:00 p.m..- 10:00 p.m., Monday
through Thursday, and 8:00 a.m.
- 5:00 p.m. on Saturdays. Some
additional daytime hours may be
necessary for certain blocks of
instruction.

| All
paperwork must be received
before the BLET Orientation
in order to get letters
out to applicants. This
is necessary to determine
if we will have the required
number of trainees to deliver
this program. Attendance
is required for the BLET
Orientation.
|
Applications must be
submitted a minimum of two weeks
before the session begins.
In addition to attending all sessions
and successfully completing each
topic area, the candidate must
be recommended by the School Director
to take the State administered
exam at the conclusion of the
program. Therefore, proper attitude,
conduct and attendance is mandatory
in order to receive recommendation.
Only serious applicants
should apply.

Must be a United States
Citizen. |
| 2. |
Complete
a Basic
Law Enforcement Training
application
for admission and submit
it to the Public Safety
Training Center indicating
the session for which
the applicant is applying.
Applicants must be at
least 20 years old.
Along with your application
for admission, please
also provide: |

certified
copy of birth certificate
(from
the registrar of deeds
or the bureau of vital
statistics) |

evidence of a high
school diploma/GED |
| · |
copy of valid drivers
license |
| · |
certified copy of

Provide a certified
criminal record check
for local and state records
for the time period since
you became 16 years of age
from all locations of residence.
An Administrative Office of
the Courts criminal record
check or a comparable out-of-state
criminal record check will
satisfy this requirement.

A letter
of sponsorship
from a North Carolina law
enforcement agency signed
by the Chief or Sheriff which
states that your character
is appropriate for the law
enforcement profession, and
that a background check has
been performed (preferably
with histories attached),
and that no reason was found
to deny sponsorship, must
be submitted. This letter
must be on agency letterhead.
NOTE: The sponsor has the
right to withdraw sponsorship
based on actions of the trainee. (see
sample letter) |

Medical
forms, provided
to the applicant, must be
completed by a physician,
physician’s assistant,
or a nurse practitioner and
submitted to determine fitness
to perform the essential job
functions of a law enforcement
officer. The physical should
not have been performed no
more than six-months
before the beginning
date of the session applied
to attend. If attending Detention
Officer Certification or Basic
Law Enforcement Training,
physical must be completed
in North Carolina. |

Prior to admission to
the BLET program, applicants
must take the Test
for Adult Basic Education
(TABE).
All applicants must score
the minimum of a 10th grade
reading level. The test
is conducted at Southwestern
Community College’s
Macon
Annex on Tuesdays at
5:30 p.m. and Wednesdays
at 1 p.m. Please call Pam

exam prior to the BLET orientation.

TO TAKE EXAM. |
Any
applicant who would not
be eligible to be sworn
as a law enforcement officer
in the State of North Carolina
is ineligible to enroll
in the North Carolina Basic
Law Enforcement Training.
The
BLET program requires physical
activities that can be strenuous
in nature. It is advisable
to begin an exercise program
before beginning BLET that
includes “military
type” push-ups, sit-ups,
and running/jogging, especially
if an exercise routine is
not a normal activity. |
COST:
There is an approximate fee of
$250.00 for uniforms (the fee
will be based on current available
pricing) (if size 2XL or larger,
there is an additional fee) and
a fee for books (please see below
for book information).
Trainees
must provide flashlights, hearing
protection (over-the-ear type)
and eye protection for the firing
range. Weapons, duty belt,
handcuff case, handcuffs, holsters
and ammunition will be provided.
Vehicles for Driver Training are
also provided.
DRESS:
Uniform type shirts
and pants are required for all
classroom and practical activities.
Only approved outer wear will
be allowed during classroom and
practical setting. You will be
provided with two (2) sets of
uniform shirts and pants, one
(1) fleece jacket approved to
wear over uniform shirt, two (2)
sets of shorts and t-shirts (worn
for physical training) and one
(1) safety vest. Additional clothing
can also be purchased. The requirement
is that trainees present themselves
with a neat, clean appearance.
Trainee’s who attend any
activity relative to BLET without
the appropriate attire could be
dismissed from training. The trainee
will be required to wear black,
rubber soled shoes that can be
polished. The trainee will also
need to have either running or
cross training style sneakers
for physical training. All uniforms
and physical fitness attire will
be ordered on the day of the BLET
Orientation, and will be paid
for in advance with cash, credit
card, check or a billing letter
from an agency.
