Southwestern Community College
is committed to helping students
achieve their needs for certification
and re-certification, through
a broad spectrum of update classes
offered throughout Macon, Jackson,
and Swain Counties as well as
the Qualla Boundary.
The EMS Continuing Education
Department program currently offers
classes that introduce new students
to the world of emergency medical
care through Basic Life Support
Education. Completion of the Medical
Responder and Emergency Medical
Technician - Basic class will
prepare the student for examination
by the State of North Carolina
for official certification. Once
certified by the state, students
will be prepared to fill the role
of a basic medical responder on
a Transport Unit or in a Fire
Department as a first responder.
Our department also offers a
wide variety of classes geared
to the Advanced Life Support Programs
in the area. From initial introduction
to Advanced Life Support in an
Intermediate EMT class to developing
classes for the ever-changing
profession of Emergency Medical
Science, Southwestern Community
College has what you need to enhance
your performance in the field.
Classes are offered at all SCC
locations and at various times
throughout the year. Please refer
to our Continuing Education handout
for a list of classes currently
being offered. In order to ensure
a place in class, you must preregister.

Classes
General
prerequisites for North Carolina
Certification include delivery
of the following: Proof of High
School diploma or equivalency,
immunization records, at least
a tenth grade equivalent on The
Adult Basic Education exam. Specific
prerequisites are listed with
each description below.
EMT Online: This program
will focus on the same core components
as the EMT-B class held on campus.
The major difference is time spent
in a classroom setting. All didactic
education will be delivered through
a web-based design. It will also
afford students the ability to
study around work schedules. Minimal
time will be scheduled for hands-on
practice.
Medical Responder: The
Medical Responder class prepares
students to treat ill or injured
patients in the field. The class
consists of basic emergency procedures
including CPR, airway management,
assessment and treatment of medical
and traumatic emergencies. The
total class consists of 60 hours
didactic and hands-on patient
scenario training. Current CPR
certification is recommended.
Medical Responder to Emergency
Medical Technician - Basic Bridging
Program: This class will give
students (that have successfully
completed an approved Medical
Responder class) the opportunity
to obtain an EMT-B certificate.
These classes include a more in-depth
approach to basic emergency medical
treatment and award the student
for previous classes taken. Prerequisites
include successful completion
of an approved Medical Responder
program, current certification
as a medical responder, and current
CPR certification.
Emergency Medical Technician

skills in emergency medicine.
The Intermediate is prepared to
administer advanced level airway
management as well as initiate
intravenous therapy, calculate
and dose several medications,
and understanding of human anatomy
and physiology. The intermediate
is a vital part of the emergency
medial system providing emergency
care and assisting paramedics
in fulfilling their duties. This
class consists of 72 hours didactic
education with clinical education
of 24 hours in the hospital emergency
department and 24 hours of field
internship at area EMS agencies.
Prerequisites include current
EMT-B certification, TABE test
if you did not take EMT-B at Southwestern
Community College and Current
CPR certification.
Emergency Medical Dispatcher:
The EMD is an essential link in
the chain of survival. This class
is directed at 911 telecommunication
personnel and gives them the training
needed to deliver life-saving
treatment to the patient. This
treatment is achieved through
directing the public with step-by-step
instruction over the phone.
Plans
for Future Classes
EMT Refresher Training Online
These courses will allow students
to achieve needed refresher classes
for re-certification over the
Internet. Although most classes
must be obtained through class
settings, many can be done on
your own pace - thus allowing
you to study around your busy
work schedule.
Adapting to the Wilderness
Environment
In this class we will bring the
urban EMS to the wilderness. We
will teach Medical Responders
and Emergency Medical Technicians
that are already certified how
to utilize their skills in an
environment that can be very adverse.
Tactical Medicine
This class will teach SWATteam
members how to deliver lifesaving
aid to an injured officer or suspect
when other resources are not available.
