Southwestern Community College is committed to helping students achieve their needs for certification and re-certification, through a broad spectrum of update classes offered throughout Macon, Jackson, and Swain Counties as well as the Qualla Boundary.
Emergency Medical Science - Southwestern Community College Public Safety Training Center
The EMS Continuing Education Department program currently offers classes that introduce new students to the world of emergency medical care through Basic Life Support Education. Completion of the Medical Responder and Emergency Medical Technician - Basic class will prepare the student for examination by the State of North Carolina for official certification. Once certified by the state, students will be prepared to fill the role of a basic medical responder on a Transport Unit or in a Fire Department as a first responder.

Our department also offers a wide variety of classes geared to the Advanced Life Support Programs in the area. From initial introduction to Advanced Life Support in an Intermediate EMT class to developing classes for the ever-changing profession of Emergency Medical Science, Southwestern Community College has what you need to enhance your performance in the field.

Classes are offered at all SCC locations and at various times throughout the year. Please refer to our EMS Training Calendar for upcoming classes. In order to ensure a place in class, you must pre register.

American Heart Association (AHA) courses
Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers (BLS)
 

This course is designed to teach the skills of CPR for victims of all ages, use of an automated external defibrillator and relief of choking. For healthcare providers – for example, EMS personnel, physician assistants, physicians, dentists, nurses, respiratory therapists and others who must have a credential (card) documenting successful completion of a CPR course.

Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
  Healthcare providers will enhance their skills in the treatment of the adult victim of a cardiac arrest or other cardiopulmonary
American Heart Association - Heartsaver CPR
emergencies. ACLS emphasizes the importance of basic life support CPR to patient survival; the integration of effective basic life support with advanced cardiovascular life support interventions; and the importance of effective team interaction and communication during resuscitation. Students engage in simulated clinical scenarios that encourage active, hands-on participation through learning stations where students will practice essential skills individually, as part of a team, and as team leader. Realistic simulations reinforce the following key concepts: proficiency in basic life support care; recognizing and initiating early management of peri-arrest conditions; managing cardiac arrest; identifying and treating ischemic chest pain and acute coronary syndromes; recognizing other life-threatening clinical situations (such as stroke) and providing initial care; ACLS algorithms; and effective resuscitation team dynamics. BLS for Healthcare Providers is a pre-requisite for this class.
Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
 

This course is designed to aid the pediatric healthcare provider in developing the knowledge and skills necessary to efficiently and effectively manage critically ill infants and children, resulting in improved outcomes. BLS for Healthcare Providers is a pre-requisite for this class.

Heartsaver CPR
 

This course is designed for employee training at companies, corporations, businesses or other entities. For employees and/or designated first responders who have a duty to respond to a cardiac emergency because of job responsibilities or regulatory requirements. Topics include: Adult/Child CPR, Adult/Child choking. Optional topics include Infant skills and the use of barrier devices.

Heartsaver AED
 

This course is designed for employee training at companies, corporations, businesses or other entities. For employees and/or designated first responders who have a duty to respond to a cardiac emergency because of job responsibilities or regulatory requirements. Topics include: Adult/Child CPR with mask, Adult/Child Choking, Adult/Child AED. Optional topics include Infant CPR with mask, Infant choking.

Heartsaver First Aid
 

This course is designed for employee training at companies, corporations, businesses or other entities. For employees and/or designated first responders who have a duty to respond to a first aid emergency because of job responsibilities or regulatory requirements. Topics Include: Adult first aid (general principles, medical and environmental emergencies and injury emergencies).

Heartsaver First Aid with CPR & AED
 

This course is designed for employee training at companies, corporations, businesses or other entities. For employees and/or designated first responders who have a duty to respond to a first aid emergency because of job responsibilities or regulatory requirements. Topics Include: Adult first aid (general principles, medical emergencies and injury emergencies), Adult/Child CPR with mask, Adult/Child AED.
Optional: Environmental emergencies Infant CPR with mask.

Heartsaver Pediatric First Aid
 

For those involved in child care who have a duty to respond to a first aid emergency because of job responsibilities or regulatory requirements, such as child care workers, teachers, foster care providers, camp counselors, youth organizations, and coaches for children’s sports organizations. Topics include: Pediatric first aid (first aid basics, medical emergencies, injury emergencies, environmental emergencies) Asthma care training for child care providers, Adult/Child CPR with mask, Adult/Child AED. Optional: Pediatric first aid topics, Infant CPR with mask.

Specialized Certifications
Pediatric Emergencies for Pre-Hospital Providers
  American Academy of Pediatrics, Pediatric Education for Pre hospital Professionals (PEPP) represents a complete source of pre hospital medical information for the emergent care of infants and children. Developed by the American Academy of Pediatrics, PEPP is an exciting curriculum designed specifically to teach pre hospital professionals how to better assess and manage ill or injured children. PEPP is a comprehensive, innovative, and highly visual course with case-based lectures, live action video, hands-on skills stations, and small group scenarios.
Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support
  PHTLS is developed by the National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians in cooperation with the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma. The Pre hospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) course is a unique continuing education program created in recognition of the real need in EMS education for additional training in the handling of trauma patients. This indispensable program is designed to enhance and increase knowledge and skill in delivering critical care in the pre hospital environment.
Advanced Medical Life Support
  Advanced Medical Life Support (AMLS) is an education program of the National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians (NAEMT). The program is endorsed by the National Association of EMS Physicians (NAEMSP). This program is for all levels of healthcare practitioners committed to providing quality care for patients in medical crisis.

The Provider course emphasizes a pragmatic approach and systematic format regarding patient assessment and management. The course is designed to combine interactive scenario-based lectures with hands-on physical assessments of patients. The participant will practice a global and initial assessment, taking into account the patient's environmental and scene issues.

EMS Certification Courses
Medical Responder
Course Description:
 

The Medical Responder class prepares students to treat ill or injured patients in the field. The class consists of basic emergency procedures including CPR, airway management, assessment and treatment of medical and traumatic emergencies for adults, children and infants. The total class consists of 72 hours didactic and hands-on patient scenario training.

Upon successful course completion, students will be eligible to sit for the North Carolina OEMS Medical Responder as well as the National Registry of EMT’s First Responder credentialing examination.

Course Pre-requisites:
 
1. CPR certification meeting current AHA BLS for Healthcare Provider Guidelines for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Emergency Cardiovascular Care
2. Copy of High School Diploma, GED or sealed official High School transcript
3. Prior to admission to the Medical Responder course, applicants must take the Test for Adult Basic Education (TABE). All applicants must score the minimum of a 10th grade reading level. The test is conducted at Southwestern Community College’s Macon Annex on Tuesdays at 5:30 p.m. and Wednesdays at 1 p.m. Please call Pam Bell at (828)339-4221 to pre-register for the TABE exam prior to the course. MUST BE PRE-REGISTERED TO TAKE EXAM.
4. Medical forms, provided to the applicant, must be completed by a physician, physician’s assistant, or a nurse practitioner and submitted to determine fitness to perform the essential job functions of a Medical Responder. The immunization requirements on pages 4-5 are not required of Medical Responder students because there is not a clinical component in the course, however they are recommended. Physicals should be completed no more than six months prior to the start of the course on the Medical Forms found here.

Emergency Medical Technician (EMT-Basic)
Course Description:
 

The EMT-B class is much the same as the Medical Responder class with a more in-depth approach to patient care and inclusion of ambulance operations. The student completing the EMT-B class will be prepared to fill the role of a basic, emergency medical service caregiver. The class consists of 172 hours of didactic, scenario-based training and Physical Training along with 24 hours EMS Field Internship.

Emergency Medical Technician-Intermediate (EMT-I)
Course Description
 

The EMT-I class includes more advanced level skills in emergency medicine. The EMT-Intermediate is prepared to administer advanced level airway management as well as initiate intravenous therapy, calculate and dose several medications, and possess an understanding of human anatomy and physiology. The intermediate is a vital part of the emergency medical system providing emergency care and assisting Paramedic’s in fulfilling their duties. This class consists of 188 hours didactic education with clinical education of 48 hours in the hospital emergency department and 70 hours of field internship at area EMS agencies.

Upon successful course completion, students will be eligible to sit for the North Carolina OEMS EMT-Intermediate as well as the National Registry of EMT’s, EMT-Intermediate 85 credentialing examination.

Course pre-requisites:
 
1. Current CPR certification meeting AHA BLS for Healthcare Provider Guidelines for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Emergency Cardiovascular Care
2. Copy of High School Diploma, GED or sealed official High School transcript
3. Copy of current EMT-Basic certification
4. Successful completion of an entrance exam assessing basic reading comprehension and English language writing skills on a post-secondary level and demonstration of mathematical skills at a minimum at the high school grade level. Contact the Public Safety Training Complex for information on how to schedule an appointment to take this exam.
5. Medical forms, provided to the applicant, must be completed by a physician, physician’s assistant, or a nurse practitioner and submitted to determine fitness to perform the essential job functions of an EMT-Basic. Paramedic
Course Description
 

Paramedic is the highest level of pre-hospital EMS provider in the pre-hospital setting. The Paramedic is responsible to provide all aspects of care to the sick and injured. The paramedic provides both Basic Life Support as well as Advanced Life Support including comprehensive patient assessments, basic and advanced airway management procedures, vascular access and medication administration, cardiac monitoring and assessment and management of patients of all ages experiencing a variety of medical conditions and traumatic injuries. The course consists of 700 hours of didactic, scenario-based training and Physical Training along with clinical education of 200 hours of hospital/clinic time and 300 hours EMS Field Internship.
