| This course
is an awareness course designed
to cover basic response objectives
expected of a person certified
at the awareness level. Course
topics include recognizing
the presence of a hazardous
material, isolating the area
to protect the public and
responders, and identifying
the material using various
methods available to a responder.
The course will also include
elements of terrorism and
it’s potential impact
and relationship to hazardous
materials incidents. This
course meets all the competencies
required by OSHA1910.120 and
NFPA 472 1997 edition. Class
size minimum 10 but limited
to 30 students. Minimum age
16. All 16-18 year old need
permission from high school
principal (see concurrent
enrollment on registration

protective equipment. Also
discussed will be the leading
cause of death of firefighters
and the hazardous environments
requiring the use of protective
equipment. Use, maintenance,
donning, care and handling
of SCBA will be practiced.

must pass the written exam
and practical exercises to

meet certification requirements
for salvage firefighter level
one. The course will develop
a basic understanding of salvage
techniques, use of water chutes,
and safety precautions. Minimum

Overhaul:

The material presented in
this course will deal with
the purpose of overhaul operations,
and how to recognize the location
of hidden fires and how to
expose them. The class will
cover all objectives related
to overhaul for FF I &

the methods for ventilating

that must be made when ventilating

standards course will provide
practical information about
the various types of building
construction and their influence
on firefighting tactics and
safety. The firefighter will
be able to identify the general
fire behavior expected with
each type of building construction,
including the spread of fire,
and the safety of the building,
occupants, and firefighters.
Issues involving construction
principles, wood frame and
ordinary construction will
be discussed. Class size minimum

Technician: VMR Vehicle Machinery

| This class
will present new technologies
in vehicle construction, which
present hazards for rescue
personnel, such as crumple
zones, bumper systems, air
bags/ side impact protection
systems, and hybrid vehicles.
The construction of buses
will be covered as it relates
to rescue, including access
points, structural components,
fuel systems, and emergency
exits. Features of machinery,
as found in tractors, forklifts,
crawlers, and other heavy
machinery will be discussed
as well as, victim removal
from this type of heavy equipment.
MUST MEET MINIMUM AGE REQUIREMENTS

| This class will
present to the Rescue Technician
safe and effective methods
of rescue in elevated and
below grade environments using
ropes, knots and rope related
equipment. Mechanical advantage,
anchors, anchoring techniques
and stress loads will be covered
for situations in below ground,
confined space, agricultural
settings involving grain silos
and bins, river crossing and
many more emergency scenes.
Riggings and raises for safely
and successfully moving patients
from urban and wilderness
environments will be discussed.
Students must be at least
18 years old. |

| This course
deals with the safe operation
of emergency vehicles, driving
skills, legal implications
of emergency driving and departmental
standard operating procedures.
This course is a stand-alone
certification and is also
a prerequisite to Driver Operator
certification by the North
Carolina Fire Rescue Commission.
Departments sending students
to this course should bring
a truck from their department.
Students must be 18 years
old. This class will meet
Friday from 6:00-10:00pm,
Saturday from 8:00am- 5:00pm,
and Sunday from 8:00am-5:00pm.

incidents, regardless of cause,
size, including acts of terrorism.
State and local agencies are
required to adopt the NIMS

regarding a fire. |

of the first responder during
the various stages of an incident
are extremely critical. This
course will cover fire behavior,
first responder observations,
fire causes, scene security,
and preservation of evidence,
legal considerations, and
reporting of findings. |
