COURSE INFORMATION
FIRE (FF) AND RESCUE TECHNICIAN (RT) CERTIFICATION

Firefighter Certification Classes

Session 1
Hazardous Materials Operations (FFI RT) (24-hours)
Approved for junior fire fighters with proper paperwork
Class will begin at 2:00 p.m., Friday
This course is an awareness course designed to cover basic response objectives expected of a person certified at the awareness level. Course topics include recognizing the presence of a hazardous material, isolating the area to protect the public and responders, and identifying the material using various methods available to a responder. The course will also include elements of terrorism and it’s potential impact and relationship to hazardous materials incidents. This course meets all the competencies required by OSHA1910.120 and NFPA 472 1997 edition. Class size minimum 10 but limited to 30 students. Minimum age 16. All 16-18 year old need permission from high school principal (see concurrent enrollment on registration form).

Session 2
Personal Protective Equipment (FFI, RT) (15 hours)
Class will begin at 6:00 p.m., Friday
This class will present the firefighter and rescue technician with the function of the article of protective equipment. Also discussed will be the leading cause of death of firefighters and the hazardous environments requiring the use of protective equipment. Use, maintenance, donning, care and handling of SCBA will be practiced. Class size minimum 10 but limited to 30 students. Students must pass the written exam and practical exercises to receive certification.

Equipment: Full turnout gear, SCBA & spare bottle. SCBA bottles must have current hydro-test date.

Session 3
Salvage (FFI) & Overhaul (FFI&II)
Approved for junior fire fighters with proper paperwork.
Class size minimum 10 but limited to 30 students.
Salvage: (Saturday) (6 hours) Class will begin at 9:00 a.m.
This class is designed to meet certification requirements for salvage firefighter level one. The course will develop a basic understanding of salvage techniques, use of water chutes, and safety precautions. Minimum age 16. All 16-18 year old need permission from high school principal (See concurrent enrollment on registration form).
Overhaul: (Sunday) (6 hours) Class will begin at 8:00 a.m.
The material presented in this course will deal with the purpose of overhaul operations, and how to recognize the location of hidden fires and how to expose them. The class will cover all objectives related to overhaul for FF I & II. Minimum age 16. All 16-18 year old need permission from high school principal (See concurrent enrollment on registration form).

Session 4
Fire Behavior (FF I/II) (12-hours)
Class will begin at 9:00 a.m., Saturday
This course will present the firefighter with the stages of fire, the products of combustion, and methods of heat transfer.

Session 5
Fire Hose, Streams & Appliances (FF I & II) (18-hours)
Class will begin at 6:00 p.m.,Friday
The firefighter candidate will be introduced to the types and appliances of hose, nozzles, and adaptors and to the tools carried on pumpers. In addition, the correct application of fire streams will be included.
MUST MEET MINIMUM AGE REQUIREMENTS (18 years of age or older), and not a current high school student. Class size minimum 10 but limited to 30 students.

Session 6
Ventilation (FF I & II) (18 hours)
Class will begin at 6:00 p.m., Friday
This course presents the firefighter candidate with the principles of ventilation and tools needed to perform ventilation to various types of roofs. The student will learn the use of and need for automatic venting devices, the methods for ventilating basement s, the used of forced ventilation and considerations that must be made when ventilating a structure. MUST MEET MINIMUM AGE REQUIREMENTS (18 years of age or older), and not a current high school student. Class size minimum 10 but limited to 30 students.

Session 7
Building Construction (FF II) (11 Hours)
Approved for junior fire fighters with proper paperwork
Class will begin at 9:00 a.m., Saturday
This firefighter standards course will provide practical information about the various types of building construction and their influence on firefighting tactics and safety. The firefighter will be able to identify the general fire behavior expected with each type of building construction, including the spread of fire, and the safety of the building, occupants, and firefighters. Issues involving construction principles, wood frame and ordinary construction will be discussed. Class size minimum 10 but limited to 30 students. Minimum age 16. All 16-18 year old need permission from high school principal (See concurrent enrollment on registration form).

Session 8
Fire Control (FF I ) (18 hours)
Class will begin at 6:00 p.m., Friday
This class will enable the firefighter to identify and apply appropriate procedures associated with hazards for the control of Class A and B fires, as well as, procedures for control of vehicle fire, trash and /or dumpster fires, and control of ground cover fires. MUST MEET MINIMUM AGE REQUIREMENTS (18 years of age or older), and not a high school student. Class size minimum 10 but limited to 24 students.

Session 9
Rescue Technician: VMR Vehicle Machinery Extrication (RT)
(21-hours)
Class will begin at 6:00 p.m., Friday
Maximum class size 24 students
This class will present new technologies in vehicle construction, which present hazards for rescue personnel, such as crumple zones, bumper systems, air bags/ side impact protection systems, and hybrid vehicles. The construction of buses will be covered as it relates to rescue, including access points, structural components, fuel systems, and emergency exits. Features of machinery, as found in tractors, forklifts, crawlers, and other heavy machinery will be discussed as well as, victim removal from this type of heavy equipment. MUST MEET MINIMUM AGE REQUIREMENTS (18 years of age or older), and not a current high school student. Class size minimum 10 but limited to 24 students.

Session 10
Rescue Technician: General Ropes, Anchors & Lowers (RT)
(21-hours)
Class will begin at 6:00 p.m., Friday
Maximum class size 24 students.
This class will present to the Rescue Technician safe and effective methods of rescue in elevated and below grade environments using ropes, knots and rope related equipment. Mechanical advantage, anchors, anchoring techniques and stress loads will be covered for situations in below ground, confined space, agricultural settings involving grain silos and bins, river crossing and many more emergency scenes. Riggings and raises for safely and successfully moving patients from urban and wilderness environments will be discussed. Students must be at least 18 years old.

Session 11
Driver: Emergency Vehicle Driver EVD (Driver Operator)
(20 hours)
Class will begin 6:00 p.m., Friday
This course deals with the safe operation of emergency vehicles, driving skills, legal implications of emergency driving and departmental standard operating procedures. This course is a stand-alone certification and is also a prerequisite to Driver Operator certification by the North Carolina Fire Rescue Commission. Departments sending students to this course should bring a truck from their department. Students must be 18 years old. This class will meet Friday from 6:00-10:00pm, Saturday from 8:00am- 5:00pm, and Sunday from 8:00am-5:00pm. Class size minimum 10 but limited to 30 students.

Session 12
Introduction to Pumps (15 hours)
Class will begin at 6:00 p.m., Friday
This course will explain and identify job or individual requirements for pump operators and will detail safe operation of the vehicle. It will also detail the safe operations of pumps. It will cover administrative and general elements of NFPA 1002 Standard for Fire Department Vehicles for NC Certification. Class size minimum 10 but limited to 30 students.

Session 13
Wildland Fire Behavior (12-hours)
Class will begin at 9:00 a.m., Saturday
This course will give the firefighter an understanding of fire behavior as related to wildland fire. The course will include understanding weather conditions, determining fuel types, and predicting the intensity of wildland fires. Class size minimum 10 but limited to 30 students.

Session 14
NIMS 300 (16-hours)
Approved for junior fire fighters with proper paperwork.
Class will begin at 6:00 p.m., Friday
NIMS, provides a nationwide guide to enable federal, state, tribal, local private- sector and non-governmental organizations to work together effectively. This will allow all organizations to effectively prepare for, prevent, respond to and recover from domestic incidents, regardless of cause, size, including acts of terrorism. State and local agencies are required to adopt the NIMS system. Class size minimum 10 but limited to 30 students. Minimum age 16. All 16-18 year old need permission from high school principal (See concurrent enrollment on registration form).

Session 15
Arson Detection For The First Responder NFA (12-hours)
Class begins at 9:00 a.m., Saturday
The first responder is often in the best position to make critical observations regarding a fire.
Observations of the first responder during the various stages of an incident are extremely critical. This course will cover fire behavior, first responder observations, fire causes, scene security, and preservation of evidence, legal considerations, and reporting of findings.
