Motorcycle Safety Training

Learn safe motorcycle riding under the direction of Motorcycle Safety Foundation certified
instructors. Beginning courses are designed for riders with little or no experience. Based on extensive data, research, and field tests, this course combines classroom and on-bike experience to give overall understanding of motorcycling and prepares the student with basic riding skills. Classes are held at Southwestern Community College’s Public Safety Training Center Driving Range in Franklin, North Carolina. Class is physically demanding and all students taking the Basic Rider Course must be able to ride a bicycle.

PROPER RIDING GEAR FOR ALL STUDENTS:

Notice: Proper riding gear is required at all times including Friday evening.

Students must wear:
1. Helmet and Eye Protection: The helmet must fit properly, meet DOT standards be full face, 3/4 or 1/2 in design. Helmets with obvious defects such as no lining, a cracked shell, or defective chin strap will not be used. Sunglasses meet the eye protection requirement.
2. Over the ankle Footwear: Shoes should be predominantly leather in construction and cover the anklebone. High top athletic shoes that meet the above criteria may be worn.
3. Pants: Pant legs should reach the shoe tops and be made preferably of denim or a material of equivalent durability.
4. Long-sleeve shirt or jacket: If the student chooses to wear a long-sleeve shirt, a jacket is not required. A shirt with sleeves to the wrist made of a durable material is preferred. The shirt should cover the rider's shoulders (no shoulder cutouts allowed).

Gloves: Gloves should be full fingered and preferable made of leather. Style and material are the student's choice.



Basic Rider Course - Motorcycle Safety TrainingBasic Motorcycle Rider Course:
This course covers the basic fundamentals needed to develop your capabilities to become a safe and responsible motorcyclist. It provides the opportunity for you to learn the physical and mental skills important for operating a motorcycle. In the classroom, you will learn ways to minimize risk and handle special riding situations. During the riding portions, you will be coached to develop the physical skills of basic control that include: straight line riding, stopping, turning, and shifting, and then move on to more advanced skills in stopping quickly, cornering and swerving.

Students must be able to ride a bicycle before entering class.

Class is physically demanding.

Must pre-register and submit payment, $195.00. Class filled as payment is received.

Self-supporting, no refunds.

All students must be at least 16 years of age. Students 16 or 17 years old must have a permission form signed by a parent or guardian.


Classes meet on Friday evening, 6-10pm, and on Saturday and Sunday, 8-5pm.

Wed and Thu from 8am-5pm and Friday 8am-12Noon

Experienced Rider Course (ERC)
This course is for the rider with at least six months or 3,000 miles riding experience. Students must possess a valid driver's license with a motorcycle endorsement. The course offers classroom training on traction management and strategies for safer cycling, as well as advanced turning, braking, and swerving techniques. Students will need to furnish a street-legal, properly licensed and insured motorcycle of any size. If the motorcycle is not registered in student's name, written permission from the owner to use the motorcycle must be furnished. All motorcycles will be inspected for proper and safe condition with particular attention to tires.
Must pre-register and submit payment of $75.
Self-supporting, no refunds.

Must be 18 years old to enroll.

Advanced Rider Course (ARC):
Based in the Military Sport Bike Rider Course, this one-day course if for experienced riders who desire to learn and practice more in-depth riding techniques. Classroom activities to address personal risk management strategies; to discuss options for cornering, breaking and swerving; and to improve visual perception to identify collision traps. On-cycle range exercises provide practice in cornering, braking and swerving. There is no skill text in this course. Students will need to furnish a street-legal, properly licensed and insured motorcycle of any size. If the motorcycle is not registered in student's name, written permission from the owner to use the motorcycle must be furnished. All motorcycles will be inspected for proper and safe condition with particular attention to tires. Must pre-register and submit payment of $75. Classes limited to 12 and is filled as payment is received. Self-supporting, no refunds.

Experienced Rider/Advanced Rider Combo Course:
This two-day 16-hours course will allow riders to complete both the Experience Rider Course (ERC) and Advanced Rider Course (ARC). By combining courses rides can save money while enjoying the benefits of enhancing riding skills. Students will need to furnish a street-legal, properly licensed and insured motorcycle of any size. If the motorcycle is not registered in student's name, written permission from the owner to use the motorcycle must be furnished. All motorcycles will be inspected for proper and safe condition with particular attention to tires. Must pre-register and submit payment of $120. Classes limited to 12 and is filled as payment is received. Self-supporting, no refunds.

Basic DirtBike School:
DirtBike School is a fun, one-day, hands-on training session available to anyone 12 years old or above. MSF certified DBS Coaches will teach you basic riding skills and responsible riding practices, including risk management and environmental awareness. Student must provide motorcycle. Classes limited to 12 and is filled as payment is received. Self-supporting, no refunds. Contact 828.306.7041 to sign up for class.

Safe Driver Education:
This 8-hour course is for new drivers or those who are thinking about getting his/her license to operate a motor vehicle upon the streets and highways. Course topics to include safety features of vehicles, proper driving techniques, dangers of speeding, maintenance issues for vehicles and other related topics. Must be at least of 15 years old to attend. Class limited to 15 students and is filled as payment is received. Self-supporting, no refunds. Contact 828.306.7041 for information and to pre-register.
