During
the system-wide re-engineering of curricula in all the
state’s community colleges, each degree program
at SCC was reviewed by the Curriculum and Instruction
Committee to ensure that broad-based requirements in
general education had been met in each of its newly
revised, semester-based programs. As one of its major
goals, the C&I committee continues to monitor all
new program offerings at the college, and review and
approve all proposed changes to existing programs, in
order to maintain a requisite balance of coursework
within the area of general education. (4
& 5)
It
is primarily the Arts and Sciences division at SCC,
under the authorship of faculty from its respective
departments, which oversees the content of each general
education course offering (in the context of the NCCCS
Common Course Library) and assumes responsibility for
designing course outlines which meet its educational
goals irrespective of individual students’ major
programs of study (6).
Any
substitution of courses among an individual student’s
general education requirements must be requested in
writing by a curricular advisor and authorized by the
appropriate dean before its final review by the registrar
(7).
A
review of the College’s associate degree program
requirements confirms that each program requires at
least 15 hours of general education courses (8
& 9).
