NC
Administrative Code and NCCCS program standards for Associate
in Applied Science degrees require a minimum of 15 semester
hours in general education which include 6 hours in communication,
3 hours in humanities/fine arts, 3 hours in social/ behavioral
science, and 3 hours in natural science/ mathematics.
The Associate in Arts degree requires 6 hours in composition,
12 hours in humanities/ fine arts, 12 hours in social/
behavioral science, 8 hours in natural science, and 6
hours in mathematics, in addition to 20 elective hours
in general education courses. A review of the College’s
associate degree program requirements confirms that each
program requires at least 15 hours of general education
courses (1).
All general education and program requirements are defined
and standardized by the North Carolina Administrative
Code (2) and
the North Carolina Community College System (3)
and managed at the state level. Definitions for all course
requirements within the NCCCS are registered in a uniform,
three-sentence format provided at the system office Common
Course Library website (4).
A Curriculum Review Committee approves and posts all revisions
to current course descriptions (5).
An additional fourth sentence may be added to descriptions
locally when class emphasis will be more particularly
focused or delivery methods less typical (6).
The addition of a fourth sentence becomes part of the
description for all sections of the affected courses offered
at the College.
Academic requirements for all programs of study offered
by the institution are described and outlined in the college
catalog, published in a print version (7), and also available
at the college website (8
& 9).
The NCCCS maintains the curriculum standards to which
all general education and major program requirements at
SCC conform (3).
Guidelines for all curriculum standards were established
during a statewide re-engineering project (1995-1998),
which converted all state community colleges to the semester
system and created the Common Course Library. Applications
for new programs or changes to current programs are submitted
for review before the College’s Curriculum and Instruction
Committee (10).
All new programs must receive approval from the college
president and Board of Trustees and follow Curriculum
Program Application Procedures from the NCCCS (11).
A newly initiated interdisciplinary approach to assessing
general education core competencies applicable to all
program curricula measures competencies in communication
skills, writing skills, critical thinking skills, quantitative
reasoning skills, research skills, computer/ technology
skills, collaborative skills, and cultural literacy (12).
This initiative is aligned with recommendations of the
American Association of Colleges and Universities’
Twelve Principles of Sound Practice in General Education
(13).
