Southwestern Community College Chorale

Southwestern Community College Chorale will present its winter concert, A Joyous Holly Day Concert, on Tuesday, Dec. 8, at 7:30 p.m. in the Balsam Center Lobby on the Jackson Campus.

A second performance will be held on Thursday, Dec. 10, at 7:30 p.m. in the Cecil Groves Center on SCC’s Macon Campus in Franklin. Both programs are free and open to the public.

The program will feature traditional and popular choral numbers, as well as selected soloists from the chorale. Accompanist Annie Harlow will also perform on the dulcimer with soloist Genia Edmunds in the Huron Carol.

The SCC Chorale is a non-audition vocal music performance group which meets once a week on the Jackson County Campus. Membership is open to all present, past and future SCC students 18 years or older, staff and faculty, friends and family who have the desire to sing. Membership requirements are the ability to match pitches and sing in key with a piano and other singers; the desire to sing with enthusiasm; make great music with energy; and to work with others to create an enjoyable musical experience. The ability to read music is helpful but not necessary. Music reading and appreciation will be taught through the use of the ensemble literature performed by the Chorale. The Club sponsor is presently Mr. Raymond Durkee, adjunct music professor.

Club officers are elected from the student members. They assume the responsibility of organizing the programs, setup, sorting and collating music, communicating with the director and other chorale business as needed.

The Chorale rehearses on Tuesday evenings from 6:30 – 8 pm in the Student Lounge of Bradford Hall. Membership forms may be downloaded here or picked up in the main office of Oaks Hall, requested from any chorale officer or Mr. Durkee or just come to a rehearsal. The chorale will usually perform two or three concerts per semester. Concerts will feature the Chorale and various soloists from the ensemble as well as occasional guest artists. The Chorale is also looking for student musicians to accompany us from time to time. Keyboard/piano players/ accompanists are always needed. However, we are also looking for drum set drummers, bass guitar or upright bass, rhythm guitar, banjo, fiddle, and any wind players. If you have a talent in this area please stop by Mr. Durkee’s office in Oaks Hall or stop by a rehearsal in Bradford. If enough interest is shown there is the possibility of forming a show choir as part of the larger ensemble. Repertoire performed by the Chorale and Show Choir will include Broadway, Classical, Contemporary, and old and new favorites for four and three part chorus. Solos, duets and other smaller ensembles will be available to challenge the advanced singers!

If you have an interest in singing Please, come join the SCC Chorale and help us build and maintain an outstanding and energetic music program here on our campus.
