Career
Planning & Placement Office
Not all students have a clear picture
of which career path they want to
follow. That’s okay! Just
the experience of being a college
student brings you greater awareness
of how your own interests, strengths,
and struggles match or don’t
match with available technical or
professional career options. College
personnel who provide career planning
services are available to assist
you in making wise choices that
will help you attain your own chosen
goals. They offer you opportunities
for self and career exploration
through the use of personality and
interest inventories. Other services
offered include assistance with
resume preparation, letter writing,
and job interviewing. A current
list of job openings and employer
listings is also provided by this
office.
Financial
Aid Office
A college education requires money.
That’s a fact that many
see as a barrier that seems impossible
to overcome. Fortunately, such
a belief is untrue. Federal monies
are available to anyone who qualifies
as having significant need - that
is, anyone who normally could
not attend college without aid.
This money is not a loan and does
not require payback when used
as allowed. Because it can take
several weeks to process information
and receive notice of eligibility,
applications for Federal financial
assistance should be completed
and sent in as soon as possible.
You may also qualify for low interest
loans, including some that do
not require repayment to begin
until six months after you have
graduated from your chosen program.
Work-Study is another available
option that provides minimum wage
paying jobs on campus for you
to earn additional money for educational
expenses. Determination of work-study
hours for which you may qualify
depends on a combination of need,
available money, and the amount
of other financial aid you have
been awarded.
Many scholarships are also available.
Like Federal awards (i.e. PELL
Grant), scholarships are grants
made to qualifying students offered
by businesses, organizations,
foundations, or individuals. The
various awards can be reviewed
and applied for in the Financial
Aid Office and on the SCC website.
Community
& Government
There are many other available
funds for qualifying individuals
through various government agencies
such as the Workforce Investment
Act (WIA), the North Carolina
Division of Vocational Rehabilitation
(VR), the Social Security Administration,
the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA),
and the Department of Veterans
Affairs.
We encourage you to explore all
possible options for financial
assistance. The more relieved
you are of financial stress, the
more energy you can channel towards
attending to and fulfilling your
academic requirements.
Childcare
Many students attending community
college classes are faced with
critical decisions about childcare
for their preschool children.
In making a decision to return
to school, it is as important
for parents to consider their
own needs for class and study
time as it is to attend to the
well-being of their children.
Trying to find a healthy balance
that will meet the needs of both
parent and child can be quite
a challenge. Southwestern Child
Development Commission offers
subsidized childcare and has daycare
facilities in Jackson, and surrounding
counties. Because there is often
a waiting list at each of the
centers, it is advisable to add
your child’s name to this
list as soon as possible.
