Spotlight - December 2002
|

Message from the Director's Desk
We
have experienced a whirlwind of activities and services
fall semester 2002.
In a nutshell we: toured The Fox Theatre, WCU, UNC,
sang with Jennifer Holiday, danced with Mamma
Mia!, karaoked to our favorite artists at the Welcome
Back kick-off, braved the rapids of the Nantahala
and the bats of Worleys Cave and we fiddled
on the roof at the Asheville Community Theatre. In addition,
we served our community by beautifying the Dillsboro
road, assisting with disability awareness at local elementary
schools, delivered up some home cookin at the Jackson
County Community Table and celebrated the joy of
the season by co-sponsoring a Christmas party for local
children. Academically, we learned the language of
the Portuguese, French, Germans, Dutch, Spanish, and Italians
through Martis foreign film reading component, read
10 books through the Motheread/Fatheread initiative, tutored,
tutored and tutored some more, signed on for academic support
groups, planned spring semester courses, checked
mailboxes and talked, talked and talked some more about
personal and academic challenges.
Marti, Laurie, Rob and I are respectful to you for your
commitment to your education and we thank you for allowing
us to be a part of your journey. As the saying goes, We
make the road by walking. Whatever your pace, we are
here for you.
Happy
Holidays!

Word
of the Month
mordacious \mor-DAY-shuss\ (adjective)
| 1: |
biting
or given to biting |
| 2: |
biting
or sharp in manner or style; caustic |
Example
sentence:
Christine Baranski, playing the blunt, mordacious sister-in-law,
Connie, . . . excel[s] at delivering unequivocally mean
lines and making them sound funny. (Douglas Cruickshank,
The San Francisco Examiner, March 11, 1994)
Did
you know? The Earl of Carnarvan, referred to in 1650 as
mordacious, didnt go around biting people;
it was his biting sarcasm that inspired that
description. The words association with literal
biting didnt come up until later, occurring first
in an 18th-century reference to mordacious
bats. The caustic sense of mordacious
is the more frequent use these days, but admittedly, neither
sense is especially common. If you prefer a less esoteric
option you can choose mordant, a synonym that
sees a bit more use. Both adjectives descend from Latin
mordere, a verb meaning (literally) to
bite or sting. If you want to sink your teeth into
more mordere derivatives, you might use mordacity
to refer to a biting quality of speech, or substitute
mordancy for incisiveness or harshness.

Look
who is in the Spotlight . . .
Ray
Tucker
Ray
is currently pursuing an Associate of Applied Science
Degree in Cyber
Crime Technology. Already an SCC graduate, he holds
an Associate Degree in Office
Systems Technology. Rays current academic goal
is to do well and graduate from the Cyber Crime program.
As far as his future goals, landing an excellent job in
this field would be one of his top priorities.
Ray is a resident of Sylva. In his spare time, aside from
all his studies and attending classes, he enjoys action
movies. Ray attributes part of his success to the inspiration
of his mom. When asked if there is anyone at SCC who inspired
him, Ray simply responds, students older than myself!
If you would like to meet Ray, simply stop by the SSS
office during the work week to say hello. He is currently
helping in the office as the area workstudy.
