Director's Message
This may be the last newsletter many of you receive. Graduation, college transfer, change in career goals, which no longer include SCC, family issues that will prohibit you from continuing to be a SCC student are all events, good and bad, which will keep you from being with us next year. So, in light of pending departures, I would like my final words to you to be: “Fail Forward with Confidence!”

Learn from your mistakes... as this, and only this, will allow you to move forward in life, on the job and in relationships. Consider “forward” failures job security; after all, who is going to fire someone who makes a $1000 mistake...they have just spent $1000 on you in training.

Learn from the mistakes of others...you will never live long enough to make them all yourself! And, as others around you make mistakes, note the one’s who do so in resilient fashion...those who bounce back, and who bounce higher and higher and higher!!

And, it is not the start that matters... merely the finish. You create your journey and by doing so are also creating your destiny. Which road will you take? The road well worn where all men have passed before. Or, will you choose the road less traveled, the road of opportunity, personal growth and, of course, the road full of chances for forward failures. Nothing in life can be considered a failure if you learn from the experience.

Carry on, and always know that YOU have a group of faculty and staff at SCC who wish you only the best in life ~ Through your many successes and failures, you will always have a support team from SCC.

Cheryl

In this Month's Spotlight: Laurie PriceLaurie Price

Laurie Price is in the spotlight for this month. Laurie will be graduating May 10 with an Associate in Arts (College Transfer) degree. Her goal is to enter Western Carolina University in the fall and work on her Bachelor's Degree in Education. The recipient of the Achievement Award for the Outstanding Southwestern Community College Student, Laurie will receive a scholarship to attend WCU.

Many of you will recognize Laurie as one of the indispensable lab assistants in the Learning Assistance Center (LAC). Her helpful nature has been an asset to the students who use the lab, as well as, Barb Putman, the Director of Academic Support. According to Laurie, Barb has been quite an inspiration for her. Laurie explains, ". . . she (Barb) seems to always have confidence in my abilities."

Laurie enjoys reading and listening to music. One of her favorite singers is Dwight Yoakam and Laurie has been known to travel some distance to attend one of his concerts.

One interesting fact about Laurie is that she has a daughter, Rebecca and a son, Franklin. Now you might think there is nothing unusual there--however, they are 20 years apart!!!
