Student
Support Services
Spotlight - November 2002
|

Message from the Director's Desk
It
is hard to believe that half the semester has already come
and gone. It will be time to register for spring semester
before you know it. Go to class, study smart and have a
great time entering the season of giving.
I
would like to thank each one of you who has joined us in
our new Volunteer Enrichment Activities. And a special thanks
goes out to Rob for creating this new service. If you did
not already know, your Student Support Services Program
has adopted the 3 mile stretch of highway along the back-road
between Sylva and Dillsboro and four times a year we will
be doing our part to beautify the area we live in.
In
Addition to the Adopt-a-Highway Program, once a month, we
will highlight an agency who can always use a few extra
warm bodies. If you did not participate in our most recent
Volunteer Enrichment Activity now is the perfect time of
year to get involved with Volunteer Enrichment. Thanksgiving
and Christmas provide us with opportunities to be thankful
for what we have and to give to others most often, your
giving of time is so much more meaningful than a material
gift.
Enjoy
the rest of your fall semester.

Word
of the Month
daedal \DEE-dul\ (adjective)
1 a : skillful, artistic b : intricate
2 : adorned with many things
Example sentence: Without our map, we would have
gotten completely lost in the citys daedal network
of one-way streets.
Did you know? You might know Daedalus as the mythological
prisoner who fashioned wings of feathers and wax to escape
from the island of Crete with his son Icarus. But it was
as architect and sculptor, one said to have designed a
labyrinth for King Minos on Crete, that he earned his
name. Daedalus (from Greek daidalos)
is Latin for skillfully wrought. The same
skillful Latin adjective also gave English the adjectives
daedel (in use since the 16th century) and
Daedalian (or Daedalean), a synonym
of daedal.

Look
who is in the Spotlight . . .
Teresa
Burrell
Our
November spotlight is on Teresa Burrell. Teresa is a resident
of Cullowhee, where she lives with her 13-year-old son,
Travis. She is currently pursuing an Associate of Applied
Science Degree in Office
Systems Technology. Her main goal at this time is
to simply achieve her degree.
As a member of the OST (Office Systems Technology) Club,
Teresa holds the office of President. She maintains a
4.0 gpa and received the honor of inclusion in the Presidents
List for Spring Semester 2002.
Apart from family, school and all the preparation for
exams and homework, Teresa finds the time to enjoy crafting,
sewing, working with clay, painting and reading. A published
author, she boasts an entry in the SCC Milestone,
an annual art and literature review published by Southwestern
Community College. If you happen upon the 2002 copy of
this magazine, her story is entitled Which Beauty?
and can be found on page 41.
Teresas sister, Regina, was the inspiration behind
her return to college. In addition to this sisterly support,
Teresa receives encouragement from her co-advisors, Rob
Campbell and Linda Talbott. And just as important is the
support she receives from all her friends.
