Message from the Director's Desk
All
Aboard!
|
|
Following
is a poem that was sent to all SSS Directors this week.
I hope you will find value in the message. My column this
month is dedicated to you reading the poem and finding a
place to build a bridge in your life. Cheryl
The
Bridge Builder
An old man, going a lone highway,
Came at the evening, cold and gray,
To a chasm, vast and deep and wide,
Through which was flowing a sullen tide.
The old man crossed in the twilight dim-
For that sullen stream has no fears for him;
But he turned, when he reached the other side,
And built a bridge to span the tide.
Old
man said a fellow pilgrim near,
You are wasting strength in building here.
Your journey will end with the ending day;
You never again must pass this way.
You have crossed the chasm, deep and wide,
Why build you the bridge at the eventide?
The
builder, lifted his old gray head.
Good friend, in the path I have come, he said,
There
followeth after me today
A youth whose feet must pass this way.
This chasm that has been naught to me
To that fair-haired youth may a pitfall be.
He, too, must cross in the twilight dim;
Good friend, I am building the bridge for him.

Word
of the Month
palmary
[PAL-muh-ree or PAHL-muh-ree] adjective: outstanding,
best
Example sentence: Louis Pasteur is best known for
originating pasteurization, but he also made palmary contributions
in the field of immunology, including finding a vaccination
for anthrax.
Did you know? English speakers have been using
palmary since the 1600s, and its history stretches
back even further than that. It was the ancient Romans
who first used their palmarius to describe
someone or something extraordinary. Palmarius
literally translates as deserving the palm.
But what does that mean exactly? Was it inspired by palms
of hands coming together in applause? That would be a
good guess, but the direct inspiration for palmarius
was the palm leaf given to a victor in a sports competition.
That other palm, the one on the hand, is loosely related.
The Romans thought the palm trees leaves resembled
an outstretched palm of the hand; they thus used their
word palma for both meanings, just as we do
with palm in English.

Look
who is in the Spotlight . . .
David
Cummins
Octobers
spotlight is on David Cummins. David is currently in the
General Occupational Technology program awaiting acceptance
into Radiography. He would like to work as a radiographer
in a private business or possibly a hospital. David thinks
it would also be interesting to x-ray animals.
Davids parents live in Sylva and he has a brother
in Cashiers. Also residing with David is his pitbull named,
C.A.T. (pronounced C A Tee). David enjoys hanging out
with his friends, playing his bass guitar and listening
to punk rock music and ska.
When asked who has been an inspiration at SCC, David immediately
responds, Marti Hunter. He said, Marti was the first
one to help me here at SCC. Its important to be
treated fairly.
To graduate from Southwestern Community College is a high
priority for David. He attended high school in Texas,
and when his family moved to Sylva he was in his Senior
year. Instead of graduating, David went on to earn his
GED. A college degree is very important to David. Plus,
he said, I want to wear one of those funny hats!

clean up last week. In addition to making the North River
Road between Webster and Dillsboro look more beautiful,
we also had a lot of fun in the process.
Volunteer
Opportunities
Ever wanted to be a Big Brother or a Big Sister?
Both are greatly needed throughout the Jackson, Macon, Swain
and Haywood County area. A couple of hours a week can make
a real difference in a childs life and yours.
Got an old computer? Pathways for Independent Living
welcomes donations of computer equipment to update and refurbish
for distribution to homebound, disabled and/or elderly persons.
Pathways volunteers teach them how to access the Internet
and e-mail, so that they can develop a social network. Computers
and volunteers are needed!
