All Aboard!

The academic train has left the station and you are in route to achieving the academic and personal goals you set for yourself in early August. Walking through our College doors for the first time is the most difficult step to gaining your Associates Degree. Congratulations for coming to College and kudos to you for choosing SCC!

In most cases, the first week is the hardest - meeting new instructors, meeting new people, finding the right classroom, reviewing course syllabi and discovering how to juggle the added responsibilities of being a College student along with all of your other life responsibilities is tough. You will make mistakes...learn from your mistakes and learn from the mistakes of others because you will never live long enough to make them all yourself.

Ask questions! We expect, and want, you to ask us questions. Let us help you in your quest for higher education. Then, sit back and enjoy the teaching and learning you will experience at SCC. Each day you spend with us is another opportunity for you to: teach us, learn from us and grow!

On behalf of all the SSS team, we are so glad you are here.

Stop by and see us often,
Cheryl

dictionaryWord of the Month

tenebrous \TEH-nuh-bruss\ (adjective)

1) shut off from the light; dark, murky 2) hard to understand; obscure 3) causing gloom

Example sentence: The reasons for Aaron’s sudden decision to quit a job he had seemed to enjoy were tenebrous.

Did you know? “Tenebrous” means “obscure” or “murky,” but there’s nothing unclear about its history. Etymologists know that the word derives from the Latin noun “tenebrae,” which means “darkness.” “Tenebrous” has been used in English since the 15th century, and in the 20th century it was joined by some interesting relations. “Tenebrionid” is the name of a nocturnal beetle that is usually dark-colored and is also called a “darkling beetle.” “Tenebrism” refers to a style of painting — associated with the Italian painter Caravaggio — in which most of the figures are engulfed in shadow but some are dramatically illuminated by concentrated light.

Refreshments and/or meals will be served!

Ever thought about making a difference in a kid’s life? How about cleaning up a riverbank or teaching an elderly person to use a computer?

Here are two ways to put your thoughts into action. Beginning this fall, the Student Support Services office will begin offering volunteer enrichment opportunities to all SSS students. You may…

1. Sign up for any of the group activities throughout the year. Just like cultural enrichment, there will be advertisements to go volunteer at one of the many community service agencies on a particular day and time…or…
2. Volunteer on your own at a service agency that meets your interests - see Rob for a complete list of sites

Each time you donate your time you will complete a brief volunteer form, so that our office can keep track of your hours. Small prizes will be announced and given out each month. However, the feeling you will receive from being in relationship with those that need your help will serve as the real incentive.
For more information, drop by the office or call Rob at ext 243.

Sept 14:

Rafting on the Nantahala (Lunch is provided)
Departure: 9 am - Return: 4 pm
Dress: Water wear. Also bring a change of clothes for the ride home.

Friday,
Sept 27:
Dinner Theatre: ACT's "Fiddler on the Roof" and Magnolia's Restaurant
The following excerpt is taken from the ACT billing: Newsweek calls it “One of the greatest musical comedies of our era.” In the tiny village of Anatevka, Tevye, a poor dairyman, tries to instill in his five daughters the traditions of his tight-knit Jewish community in the face of changing social mores and the growing anti-Semitism of Czarist Russia. Rich in historical and ethnical detail, Fiddler On The Roof has touched audiences around the world with its humor, warmth and honesty. Its universal theme of tradition cuts the barriers of race, class, nationality and religion, making it a strikingly relevant and timely piece of theatre.

Departure: 5:00 PM Return: 12:00 (midnight)
Dress: Casual
Monday,
Sept 23
Volunteer Enrichment: Adopt a Highway

Janet WardLook who is in the Spotlight . . .

Janet Ward

Our spotlight this month is on Janet Ward. Janet lives in Robbinsville with her husband, Joe, and children, Ben, Tim and Katie. Janet will be graduating in May 2003 with two degrees: a diploma in Therapeutic Massage and the Associate of Arts degree (college transfer). Graduation will be the fulfillment of one of Janet’s dreams - she will be the first in her parents’ family to hold a college degree.

Janet enjoys spending any “free” time with her family as well as riding her horse, Magic, hiking, drawing and scrapbooking. She also has developed an interest in wildlife rehabilitation through her son’s senior project. To date, they have rehabilitated a fawn, a great horned owl, six bunnies, a minx and one very mischievous raccoon they named, “Bandit.” Bandit was recently released back into his natural habitat.

When asked who at SCC has been an inspiration to her, Janet acknowledges many: Jim Synder, Jackie Fortner and Allen Grant. But it seems there was one person who inspired Janet in a profound way and that person was the late Barbara Frogge. Janet said, “she (Ms. Frogge) set the belief in me that none of the dreams I had were impossible. That I had the potential in me to allow them all to come true.” However, Janet feels that her true support comes from her own family.
