“You don’t work, you don’t eat.” As a child, I must have been told that ten times a day by my dad. Heck, as an adult I still hear it from him about once a week. My dad is one of those feisty, hard working Italians; emphasis placed on hard working!! He instilled in me, and my brothers, a very strong work ethic; and as a result, I always appreciate what I have because nine times out of ten I have worked my butt off to get it. Work, work, work . . . and then, there is always more work.

Lately I have found ways to stop and enjoy life. Still, I am sure if you were to ask Mike (my husband) if I ever relaxed, he would say, “hardly” then he would go on to tell you the list of projects I have for us to do on the weekends.
I am telling you all of this for a reason.

I certainly appreciate when people do nice things for me “just because” - without me having to work, work, work. Our Cultural Enrichment Program is designed like that for you - we offer you really nice cultural outings and you don’t have to do anything to receive this luxury except sign up and SHOW UP. A HA!!! Now you know where I am going.

I have been very disappointed, to say the least, in the many of you who sign up for trips and then do not show up. Would you appreciate these trips more if I had you work for them? I am at a loss. It costs us a lot financially, logistically, and organizationally to pull these trips off and to be completely honest, I am ready to pull the plug on Cultural Enrichment for the remainder of the year.

So, here is the deal. We have already paid for the November and December programs. Your participation, or lack of, will be the determining factor in whether or not we do anything else the rest of the year. I don’t want to hear any excuses or whining. Your feet will cast the vote. So, have a real good one-on-one with your feet and I’ll either see you, or I won’t, for the next two trips.

Cheryl

brouhaha
• \BROO-hah-hah\
• noun: hubbub, uproar

Word of the month

Example sentence: The unexpected arrival of the company president caused a huge brouhaha in the office, sending everyone scurrying to tidy their desks and try to look as busy and efficient as possible.

Did you know? There is a bit of a brouhaha over the etymology of “brouhaha.” Some etymologists think the word is onomatopoeic in origin, but others believe it comes from the Hebrew phrase “barukh habba’,” meaning “blessed be he who enters” (Ps 118:26). Although we borrowed our spelling and meaning of “brouhaha” directly from French in the late 19th century, etymologists have connected the French derivation to that frequently-recited Hebrew phrase, distorted to something like “brouhaha” by worshippers whose knowledge of Hebrew was limited. Thus, once out of the synagogue, the word first meant “a noisy confusion of sound”—a sense that was later extended to refer to any tumultuous and confused situation.

Jeff MosesSpotlight (image)
Jeff Moses - Jeff Moses is our “spotlight” for November.

Jeff is not new to SCC and SSS, graduating in 1994 with a degree in Microcomputer Systems Technology. He returned to SCC in 2001 to continue his studies in the ever-changing world of computers. His current academic goal includes “achieving the highest level of professional Web Master status, as well as becoming an expert programmer on the computer and Internet.”

One teacher at SCC who has been an inspiration to Jeff is Kirk Stephens. Jeff said, “Kirk has inspired me through his accomplishments in assisting SCC with the improvement of facilities necessary for implementing current technical training curriculums.” However, Jeff would also like to include Bob Harrison, Wanda Morris, Mary Hartman, and Scott Cline in his list of instructors at SCC who “. . . have been very understanding of my visual impairment and are an integral part of my academic success.”

Jeff, himself, should be an inspiration to many students at SCC. Suffering a brain tumor at the age of five, he has learned to cope with a high degree of visual impairment. Jeff feels it is much easier today for people who are visually impaired, especially with all the advanced technology in the computer field.

In his personal life, Jeff has the support of his loving wife, Sedena, a free-lance writer and the mother of their two beautiful daughters, Kaitlyn, six years, and Brianna, four months. Jeff sincerely feels that without the help of his family, including his in-laws, it would be more of a struggle to accomplish his academic goals.

Between school and family, Jeff stays very busy. In his spare time, he likes to bowl, bike, and swim. He also enjoys researching and learning about recent breakthroughs in technology. As part of his academic discoveries, Jeff realizes he must stay on top of the continual advancements in the fast-paced world of computers and the Internet.

Cultural Enrichment

For all new and returning students:

Important Cultural Enrichment reminder
Cultural Enrichment trips are designed to broaden your cultural and/or experiential learning. Our enrichment trips are FREE to you and we want you to participate in as many as possible; however, if you sign-up for a trip, you are expected to SHOW UP! These trips are FREE to you, but they are quite costly for the Grant. If you sign-up and find out at a later date that you can not attend, you MUST give us at least 3 days notice so we can find a replacement for you. Failure to notify us will result in you “sitting out” the next two (2) trips. If you have any questions, please give me a call at ext. 245.

December Events

Madrigal Dinners and the joy of helping others. Friday, December 5th is your lucky day. There is a splendid Madrigal Dinner at WCU that SSS is going to and before that at 3:30 your heart will be warmed by taking a couple of hours to set up decorations for a children’s Holiday Celebration at the Family Resource Center just down the road in Webster. So, set up decorations for a kids’ party and feel good about yourself. Then on to the Madrigal Dinner with SSS and enjoy the evening.

Now, about working off the calories you consumed at the Madrigal Dinner . . . Tuesday, December 9th from Noon to 2:00 come help the North River Rd along the Tuckaseigee to sparkle. By helping to pick up along the road you’ll get in your bending exercises, see the beautiful river and be warmed with pizza afterwards. You will absolutely need to take this exercise break in order to stay sane during finals!!! No pick up; no sanity!

For your information: Santa and some sorority sister elves will be at the Winter Holiday Celebration mentioned above. It is for families with children in Jackson County. The party is being planned by Smart Start’s Emma Miller and the Family Resource Center’s Barbara Jefferys. It will be held December 8 from about 5:30 to 8:00 pm. If you wish to attend with your children please call Anna at 586-2845. (Try to call by Dec. 1st).

As usual, call Peter Buck at ext. #243 if you need further cajoling or have questions.
