Use your resources wisely.

SCC has an abundance of resources available free of charge to you. Could you use any help from: SSS, LAC, LRC, SLA, FAFSA, tutoring, academic support groups, supplemental grant aid, cyber-link, professional development funds, transfer initiatives including college visitations, cultural enrichment and volunteer enrichment opportunities, counseling, assistive devices, laptop loans, study resources, career interest inventories, scholarship workshops, job ready, resource ready and/or academic ready materials?

If you are unfamiliar with any of the above resources, or would like additional information pertaining to resources for your specific needs, please see your SSS advisor today. We are seven weeks into the semester and it is not the start that counts, but rather the finish that matters. If your “start” could use a little boost, let us assist in securing effective resources for your finish!
Work smart, not harder!

Cheryl

Word of the month        malinger • \muh-LING-gur\

verb: to pretend or exaggerate incapacity or illness (as to avoid duty or work)

Example sentence: When Kim called in sick on yet another beautiful summer day, her boss began to suspect she was malingering.

Did you know? Do you know someone who always seems to develop an ailment when there’s work to be done? Someone who merits an Academy Award for his or her superb simulation of symptoms? Then you know a malingerer. The verb “malinger” comes from the French word “malingre,” meaning “sickly,” and one who malingers feigns illness. In its earliest uses in the 19th century, “malinger” usually referred to a soldier or sailor pretending to be sick or insane to shirk duty. Later, psychologists began using “malingering” as a clinical term to describe the feigning of illness in avoidance of a duty or for personal gain. Today, “malinger” is used in just about any context in which someone fakes sickness or injury to get out of an undesirable task.

Volunteer Enrichment
Wednesday, October 8

Do you like to create order out of chaos? The pantry at the Community Table is totally disorganized and needs cleaning. We could use your hands and your ability to separate out Chef Boy-ar-dee from Captain Crunch and the Jolly Green Giant. Help reorder the universe Wednesday October 8th from 2:50 to 5:00. We’ll meet at the SSS office.

The Community Table provides healthy meals in a restaurant setting four nights a week. Come see what it’s like.

Cultural Enrichment

For all new and returning students:

Important Cultural Enrichment reminder
Cultural Enrichment trips are designed to broaden your cultural and/or experiential learning. Our enrichment trips are FREE to you and we want you to participate in as many as possible; however, if you sign-up for a trip, you are expected to SHOW UP! These trips are FREE to you, but they are quite costly to the Grant. If you sign-up and find out at a later date that you can not attend, you MUST give us at least 3 days notice so we can find a replacement for you. Failure to notify us will result in you “sitting out” the next two (2) trips. If you have any questions, please give me a call at ext. 245.

Look who is in the
Spotlight Jamie Weathers
Jamie Weathers - Our spotlight for October is on Jamie Weathers.
Jamie has been a part of the Student Support Services program
since she started at SCC spring semester 2001. Currently enrolled
in the Associate of Arts-College Transfer program, she plans to transfer to UNCA to major in International Studies. After earning her Bachelor’s Degree at UNCA, Jamie would like to travel to third-world countries to help however needed and to learn and understand the various cultures.

When asked who at SCC has been an inspiration to her, Jamie replied, “That is a tough question. Most of my teachers have gone out of their way to help me reach my goals and achieve high marks.” But to narrow the field, Jamie said Cheryl Conner and Barb Putman have, “. . . challenged me as a person, encouraged me, and most of all been a friend when I needed one.”

In the personal facet of her life, Jamie is married to Gerald, a golf pro who has taught her everything she ever needed to know about golf. Her home also includes the companionship of two sweet and spoiled dogs: Bailey, a golden retriever, and Sandy, a cocker spaniel.

Jamie possesses a myriad of talents and interests. She loves to travel, play golf and practice karate. Photography and creating scrapbooks are hobbies she enjoys in her spare time. However, Jamie is a true “adventure-seeker.” She went sky diving in North Carolina, drove a race car at Lowe’s Motor Speedway in Charlotte, and survived a bungi jump in Africa. Her next adventures include flying a fighter plane in Arizona, a mission trip to Bolivia, and another journey back to Africa to study and work with cheetahs.
If you happen to share a class with Jamie or see her smiling face in the hall, strike up a conversation. You will certainly enjoy getting to know this wonderful “thrill-seeker.”
