Welcome to Fall Semester 2003!

The halls are a buzz with the excitement that comes each new school year; however, by now you have certainly settled into your academic routine, met a friend or two and realized that SCC is going to be a great place to learn.

Take advantage of the many resources available to you. Your SSS office has a number of academic and personal materials that will help you succeed in your quest for a higher education. But, regardless of how many tools we can share with you, YOU are your best resource. Ask questions. WE LOVE QUESTIONS!

Congratulations for coming to SCC. By entering our doors, you have already taken the most difficult step. Now, relax, participate and enjoy the learning.

Cheryl

Word of the month        fugacious • \fyoo-GAY-shuss\

adjective: lasting a short time; evanescent

Example sentence: Julie’s bad mood was fugacious; she cheered up considerably when her son phoned to say he would be coming home for a visit.

Did you know? ”Fugacious” is often used to describe immaterial things like emotions, but not always. Botanists also use it to describe plant parts that wither or fall off before the usual time. Things that are fugacious are “fleeting,” and etymologically they can also be said to be “fleeing.” “Fugacious” derives from the Latin verb “fugere,” which means “to flee.” Other descendants of “fugere” include “fugitive,” “refuge,” and “subterfuge.”

The SSS Adopt-a-Highway clean up!!! This is our chance to take a walk along the beautiful Tuckaseigee River, soak up nature, dodge cars, bend down 538 times to pick up trash, and enjoy the good company of other SSS students and staff. It’s a good time, really. We’ll meet at 3 pm at the SSS office to get gloves, vests, bags, and such. Then we’ll carpool to our stretch of road. Sign up in the SSS office beforehand if possible. Be there or be unclean.

Cultural Enrichment

For all new and returning students:

Important Cultural Enrichment reminder
Cultural Enrichment trips are designed to broaden your cultural and/or experiential learning. Our enrichment trips are FREE to you and we want you to participate in as many as possible; however, if you sign-up for a trip, you are expected to SHOW UP! These trips are FREE to you, but they are quite costly for the Grant. If you sign-up and find out at a later date that you can not attend, you MUST give us at least 3 days notice so we can find a replacement for you. Failure to notify us will result in you “sitting out” the next two (2) trips. If you have any questions, please give me a call at ext. 245.
