Message from the Director's Desk
Message from the Director's Desk

I have two children, Harrison and Kennedy. Harrison is five and Kennedy is two, and one of their favorite books is “Where is Waldo.” Waldo is the epitome of what one would describe as “complete stimulus overload.” For those of you who are not familiar with Waldo, let me briefly fill you in . . . Waldo is a young man who loves to go places and it is up to the children (and adults) to “find” him on overly decorated pages. What I have discovered on our “Waldo” hunts is that I find myself repeating over and over again, “Where is Waldo - where could he be - do you think Waldo even knows where he is?,” in an inquisitive tone and pitch that sounds just a wee bit shy of Minnie Mouse. The kids love it and they are giddy with delight when one of them finally finds the missing Waldo.

The Waldo story is a pre-amble to a conversation I had with a student two weeks ago that went something like this:
(Me) “ I have missed seeing you in class and I am worried about you.”
(Student) “I am fine.”
(Me) “You really need to come to class if you want pass.”
(Student) “Oh, I am doing fine in my classes.”
(Me) “Hum, well, you are not doing fine in my class and if you are missing your other classes as much as mine then I really, really am worried about you.”

This conversation made me think of the Waldo book since at that moment, the student thought he was in one place but clearly I thought he was in another. If this student were the fictitious character in the Waldo book and both of us were given the challenge to find him, I am sure we would have started in very different spots.

Take a minute and do some personal reflection of YOUR “place” at SCC. Is it where you set your sights at the beginning of the academic year - and more importantly, would your professors and advisors be able to find you in your “spot?”

Take care of yourself and each other!
Cheryl

dictionaryWord of the Month
edulcorate \ih-DUL-kuh-rayt\ (verb): to free from harshness (as of attitude); soften
Example sentence: Desperately in need of a loan, Martin used every trick he knew to cajole, flatter, and edulcorate his well-heeled but frugal Aunt Clara.
Did you know? An old saying advises giving sweets to the sweet, but pragmatic types may feel it’s better to use them to edulcorate the sour. “Edulcorate” has the ideal history for a “sweets-to- the-sour” term; it derives from the Latin root “dulcis,” which means “sweet.” It is often used in contexts that refer to sweetening up a sourpuss, either with something that is
literally sweet (such as candy) or that is figuratively so (such as flattery). “Dulcis” is also the source for several terms related to soft, sweet music (such as “dulcet” and “dolce”) and an instrument that produces it (“dulcimer”).

Volunteer Enrichment

Upcoming Events:

Clean it up!It’s time to adopt our highway again.

Because we were snowed out so many times earlier this year, and because we worked with such a skeleton crew (but very able!) when we were able to clean it up, and because there is a statewide spring litter sweep, we will help beautify the North River Road between Dillsboro and Webster on:

Wednesday, April 23rd, from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m.

Meet in SSS office at 4:00 - Sign up outside of Cheryl’s office

Special THANKS to. . .

. . . Erik Carlson, Brian Gibson, Vickie Holzknecht and Barb Murray, who hung in there with all the re-schedulings for the Adopt-a-Highway clean up last UNC TV Volunteersmonth. A small number of people picked up a large amount of trash that had collected over the long winter. We’ll hit it again later this month.

Thanks, too, for all the phone answering the Raleigh group did at UNC-TV to help with their fundraising drive. Did you catch them on television?

Did You Know . . .

. . . that Sylva Clinical Associates makes available testing services for things like Learning Disabilities and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder at a greatly reduced rate for students who participate in Student Support Services? They will also work at a manageable payment plan. For a referral, call Rob at x 243.

. . . that the Community Health Access Network links people who are financially stretched, who live in Jackson County and who have no insurance with prescriptions at a lower rate or at no cost? To qualify, you must have a primary care physician at Harris Regional Hospital. A similar program exists in Macon County. For more info., call Debbie Baxter at 828-586-7718, or Rob at x 243.

Look who is in the Spotlight . . .

Darrell CurtisDarrell Curtis

Our April Spotlight is on Darrell Curtis, a true
North Carolina native. Darrell lives in Cherokee
with his loving wife and a 3-year-old that, at times, seems to be going on 20!

Darrell is currently in the Electronics Engineering Technology program and hopes to pursue this new line of work upon receiving his associates degree. His co-advisors at SCC, Rob Campbell and Ron Poor, have both been an inspiration to him. Additionally, Darrell’s tutor, Patty Graham, has inspired and helped him tremendously.

Although Darrell suffers with lower back and knee troubles, his determination to succeed at SCC and enter into this new vocation far outweigh his health barriers.

Computers, electronics and DRAG RACING, are some of Darrell’s interests and hobbies. However, due to the time and expense that drag racing involves he has had to put this particular hobby on hold - but just for a while.
