Message from the Director's Desk
Message from the Director's Desk

Welcome to spring semester 2003 at SCC. As a spring semester student, you will face an added challenge or two that fall and summer students need not worry with. So, to get you started off on the right foot, and hopefully keep you there, I want to bring to your attention two hurdles.

Hurdle number one: THE WEATHER - This is an exciting time of year as we wait in anticipation for the first major snow. Be sure and bring yourself up to speed on SCC’s INCLEMENT WEATHER SCHEDULE. Should we experience inclement weather, the college will either close or open at 10:00 am - which means your 8:00 am class will begin at 10:00 and then you will attend all of your classes but on an abbreviated schedule. The College always considers the safety of you and the employees of the college when making weather related decisions. Be sure and tune in to your local radio station or pull- up SCC’s web site for accurate information. When in doubt, safety comes first!!!

Hurdle number two: SPRING FEVER - About mid march, you will experience what every college student experiences . . . the elusive spring fever bug. How do you know you have been bitten? You long for sunshine and the great outdoors and attending classes rests on the back burner - it is mid semester, you can’t see the light at the end of the tunnel and you wonder if winter will ever end . . . the days are too long! The good thing about the spring fever bug is that it doesn’t stay around too long. Be sure you do not let the bite of the bug negatively effect your grades . . . which do stay around for the rest of your life! Keep going to classes and in between classes get outside to get your dose of the sun! Indoors can be sunny too . . . especially when you are involved in exciting classroom stuff.

Check your mailboxes every other week. And, as always, we are here for you!

dictionaryWord of the Month
abulia • \ay-BOO-lee-uh\ (noun): abnormal lack of ability to act or to make decisions

Example sentence: ”Since his college graduation, my son seems to be suffering from abulia—he just can’t decide what he wants to do next,” sighed Philip.

Did you know? ”I must have a prodigious quantity of mind;” Mark Twain once wrote, “it takes me as much as a week, sometimes, to make it up.” The indecision Twain lamented is fairly common, but it has an uncommon name: “abulia.” The English term we use today comes from a New Latin word that combines the prefix “a-,” meaning “without,” with the Greek word “boule,” meaning “will.” Although “abulia” can refer to the generalized indecision that sometimes afflicts us all, it is most likely to be used in medical or psychological contexts to describe more severe physical or mental conditions that make it difficult or impossible for an individual to act or make decisions.

Volunteer Enrichment

Upcoming Events:

Wednesday, February 26th 5-7:00 pm - Bowl For Kids’ Sake
Big Brothers/Big Sisters is a terrific organization that pairs children and adolescents from single-parent homes with adult mentors. The local BBBS chapter is putting on a bowl-a-thon in February as one of their major fund-raisers for the year. Each participant MUST get sponsorship money totaling at least $35.00. All the monies raised will go directly towards helping the kids in the program. Before you sign up, be sure that you can get the sponsors and be there on the 26th. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO BE A GOOD BOWLER! THIS EVENT IS NOT ABOUT WINNING OR SCORING THE MOST POINTS! IT’S ONLY ABOUT HAVING FUN AND RAISING MONEY FOR A GREAT CAUSE! To get more information or to sign up, come by the office.

Robert StevensLook who is in the Spotlight . . .

Robert Stevens

Our spotlight for February is on Robert Stevens.

A resident of Cullowhee, Robert is currently enrolled in the Internet Technologies program. With an already existing background in graphic design, his academic goals are clear. Robert plans to implement what he learns through his classes to expand his design capabilities to include Internet site development.

When asked who at SCC has inspired him, Robert responds, “I have been inspired by many of the single parents.” He realizes school is difficult by itself. But include children, and Robert states, “I can only imagine how much more complicated it must be - hats off to them!”

Robert’s parents have been married for 54 years - yes, 54! In addition, they have served as missionaries for the same length of time. Because of his parents’ vocation, Robert lived the first thirteen years of his life in South Africa. He even learned to speak Zulu.

Activities and hobbies related to the outdoors are of interest to Robert. With any free time he finds from school and work, Robert enjoys backpacking and camping. You may even find him canoeing down one of the local rivers.

If you meet Robert in one of your classes or pass him in the hall, say “hello” and maybe he will respond with a greeting in Zulu.

New Testing Accommodations for Students with ESPs
We have adopted a new Testing Accommodations Procedure at SCC. We think this procedure will simplify the testing process and serve you in a better manner. Please stop by the SSS office and speak with your advisor within the next week so we can review our new procedure with you and supply you with the necessary Testing Accommodation Forms.
