Spotlight - January 2003

Message from the Director's Desk
Happy
New Year to YOU!
The time is now to make those New Year Resolutions for 2003
- a practice some of us engage in out of guilt, others are
driven by the challenge of actually following through with
the resolution and a few more participate in this usually
futile act because it is something we do every year and
the familiarity of the process is both soothing and comforting...up
until the rubber hits the road and we find ourselves setting
the same resolutions next year. Reflect a second (it wont
take more than a second) do you find yourself writing the
same resolutions every year?
Here is something different you can do. Include SCC as part
of your New Year Resolutions! A simple tip regarding New
Year Resolutions is the practice of thinking in two small
jumps instead of one big leap. Make resolutions for the
spring term and the summer term - small, measurable steps,
challenging, yet achievable.
Example: Spring semester I will try harder.
HUM, sounds good at first glance but how measurable is it?
And what exactly does try mean? BAD resolution!
How about this instead. Spring semester I will improve
my academics by attending class everyday, showing up on
time and asking one thoughtful question each class.
Much better! The resolution is measurable, small, challenging
yet achievable.
Good luck to you and your family as you begin a New Year.
This is an exciting time for everyone. A chance to continue
doing what we do well and a chance to resolve to manage
some parts of our life better. I guess I better get started
right now.

Word
of the Month
eloquent \EH-luh-kwent\ (adjective)
1 : marked by forceful and
fluent expression 2 : vividly or movingly expressive or
revealing
Example sentence: Alice Walker has written prolifically
about the lives of African-Americans and her narratives
about women are especially eloquent.
Did you know? Since eloquent can have
to do with speaking, it makes sense that it comes from
the Latin verb loqui, which means to
talk. Loqui is the parent of many talkative
offspring in English. Loquacious, which means
given to fluent or excessive talk, also arose
from loqui. Another loqui relative
is circumlocution, a word that means someone
is talking around a subject to avoid making a direct statement
(circum- means around). And a
ventriloquist is someone who makes his or
her voice sound like its coming from another source.

Upcoming
Events:
Thursday,
January 23rd - 3:00-5:00 pm - Adopt A Highway
So
many people have been asking when we get to suit up in orange
and pick up more trash! The time is finally here again.
Bring comfortable clothes, a warm coat, walking shoes and
maybe a pocket-sized can of Lysol. We will honor our commitment
to keep the North River Road between Webster and Dillsboro
clean and beautiful. Meet at the SSS office at 3:00. Well
have hand cleaner and hot chocolate at the end!
Wednesday,
February 26th - 5:00-7:00 PM - Bowl For Kids Sake
Big
Brothers/Big Sisters is a terrific organization that pairs
children and adolescents from single-parent homes with adult
mentors. The local BBBS chapter is putting on a bowl-a-thon
in February as one of their major fund-raisers for the year.
SSS will have three teams with four to five bowlers on each.
Each participant MUST get sponsors. All the monies raised
will go directly towards recruiting adult mentors and matching
them with waiting kids throughout our community. Before
you sign up, be sure that you can get the sponsors and be
there on the 26th. This will be a lot of fun!

Did
You Know . . .
. . . that the United Christian Ministries is an agency
made possible by donations from religious organizations that
offers support in times of crisis? They can provide one-time
assistance to people in Jackson County with gasoline, clothing,
past-due utility bills, temporary lodging, medical bills,
diapers, food, household and personal items. For more information,
call them at 586-8228 or stop by the SSS office. Care Net
in Macon County (369-2642) operates the same way.
.
. . that the Family Resource Center houses many services
geared towards keeping children and families strong, providing
programs for single-parents, child respite care, job coaching,
parenting education, alcohol and drug treatment and literacy?
They are also a good source of information on other agencies
in the community. To find out more, come by the SSS office
or call them at 586-2845.

Look
who is in the Spotlight . . .
Virginia
Cranfield
Our
spotlight for January is on, Virginia Cranfield. Virginia
is pursuing a degree in Nursing. Currently she is taking
the preliminary classes required for many of the health
sciences programs. Virginias academic goal is to
enjoy her learning experience at Southwestern Community
College and to graduate with an Associates Degree.
While her hobbies are many, Virginia has had only a limited
time to enjoy them during her studies this past semester.
However, when she is able to find the time, you will likely
catch her gardening, restoring furniture, fishing, studying
the stars or sewing. One interesting fact about Virginia
is she has returned for an educational pursuit after an
absence of 25 years!
While at SCC, Virginia has met so many inspiring people.
She states, the school [SCC] resinates with a collective
inspiration of growth, equally divided amongst students,
faculty, and staff. As the author of this spotlight
and knowing a little about the recent events in Virginias
life, to me, she is an inspiration herself! (Laurie Butler)
