Spotlight - July 2003
|

Message from the Director's Desk
The
traffic flow within the SSS office is reflective of the
fact that many of you are taking a few months off to rejuvenate
for fall semester. If you havent already, you can
call for an appointment to register for fall 2003 during
the month of July. A few classes for the fall semester are
already full and we want to be sure you get the most convenient
schedule for your busy life. Wait no longer - give us a
call and let us build your schedule while the majority of
classes are still available to you. AND, if you have not
already applied for the 2003-2004 pell grant, do so today!
You can pick up an application at the SSS office, complete
the form and then go on-line to expedite the process.
Enjoy
the rest of your summer. Fall semester will be here before
you know it!

Word
of the Month
cacography
\kak-AH-gruh-fee\ noun
*1 : bad spelling 2 : bad handwriting
Example sentence: I always wanted to be a
contestant in the National Spelling Bee, said Pat,
but an unfortunate tendency to cacography prevented
me from qualifying.
Did you know? In its earliest use in the 16th century,
cacography meant not incorrect spelling
but a bad system of spelling. Today people
worry about misspelling words, but back then there was
little need for such concern. English spelling was far
from standardized; people spelled words any way that made
sense to them. Not every one was happy with such laxity,
however, and over the coming centuries spelling reformers
pressed for regularization. Some reformers thought spelling
should reflect the etymological background of words; others
thought words should be spelled the way they sound. And
of course, everyone believed his or her own way of spelling
was the best! Our present inconsistent system was arrived
at over time. Today cacography usually suggests
deviation from the established standards.
*Indicates the sense illustrated in the example sentence.

participate, a short hospital orientation is required. Scheduling
and weekly time commitment is negotiable. Call Elizabeth
Jenkins at the Library at 586-2016 for more information.

Look
who is in the Spotlight:
Ray
Gauthier
Our Spotlight this month is on Ray Gauthier who is currently
pursuing an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Computer
Engineering. His current academic goal is to finish the
courses necessary to receive this degree. Ray explains,
This is an accomplishment I have been wanting to achieve
for sometime. In meeting this goal, he feels he will
be better able to support his wonderful family.
Ray lives in Tuckasegee with his loving wife, Melissa, and
their first son, Brandon. They are anxiously awaiting the
arrival of their second son, Hunter. Simply ask Ray about
his family and it is quite obvious the love and pride he
has for these special people in his life--his eyes simply
light-up!
Although Rays biggest supporters are his loved ones
at home, there are others that have played a part in helping
him to reach his current academic goal. When asked if there
is anyone at SCC who has been an inspiration to him, Ray
replies, Three people come to mind: Ron Poor, Mike
Deaver and Wayne Sutton.
When Ray is not buried under the school books or busy with
his family, he loves to write, listen to music, and play
racing games. He also enjoys getting away from Jackson County
as much as possible.
One interesting fact about Ray is that he lived in six different
states before finally moving to North Carolina in 1990.
Will he remain in North Carolina or is another state calling
his name? Good luck in all your future endeavors Ray - wherever
they may lead you!
