Message from the Director's Desk
Message from the Director's Desk

“Enter to Learn, Depart to Serve”
. . . is the creed at Winston Salem State University and it seems fitting to bring it into the June Spotlight since our own Rob Campbell will be leaving us to attend to his family in Memphis, Tennessee beginning July 1.

The SSS staff learns something new everyday - often, you are our teachers. Rob has spent the last year learning all about TRIO: our mission statement, our process objectives, our outcome objectives and the wonderful students involved in this program. Lucky for us, Rob did not wait to serve. Rob quickly saw an opportunity to afford you the wonderful experience of service while you learn through coordination of the volunteer enrichment program. It turned out to be a perfect combination and we are all the better from each experience we have had during the 2002-2003 school year.

I am saddened over our loss of Rob but more sensitive to the challenges he has before him. It is incredibly hard to see Rob go; but the situation almost causes us to encourage him to go so he can take care of his family. In a sense, Rob is truly “Departing to Serve.”

In Rob’s honor, I would like for all of us to embrace the creed, “Enter to Learn AND Serve - Depart to Grow,” for the summer and fall semesters. We are fortunate to have had our time with Rob and we will all miss him more than he will ever know. The best way we can honor him is to continue on with his legacy of service to the community.

dictionaryWord of the Month
tempestuous \tem-PESS-chuh-wus\ adjective: of, relating to, or resembling a tempest; turbulent, stormy
Example sentence: Sam and Rachel have always had a tempestuous relationship—one minute fast friends, the next snarling and at each other’s throats.
Did you know? Time is sometimes marked in seasons, and seasons are associated with the weather. This explains how “tempus,” the Latin word for “time” could have given rise to an English adjective for things turbulent and stormy. “Tempus” is the root behind the Old Latin “tempestus,” meaning “season,” and the Late Latin “tempestuosus,” the direct ancestor of “tempestuous.” As you might expect, “tempus” is also the root of the noun “tempest”; it probably played a role in the history of “temper” as well, but that connection isn’t as definite.
