Spotlight - May 2003

Message from the Director's Desk
Congratulations
to all of you who have been active beyond the classroom
at SCC this year. Future employers do care about your extra-curricular
activities and service to your school and community. Did
you know that the SGA Presidential election last month had
three candidates this year? AND, did you know ALL candidates
are involved in SSS?
Your time at SCC affords you many wonderful opportunities
for growth. Within the classroom, you are challenged on
a daily basis by some of the best instructors along the
East Coast and you are sure to gain the knowledge you need
to do the job and do it well. Be sure your resume is complete
by getting involved outside of the classroom too. Your SSS
program offers monthly opportunities for volunteer enrichment
and your SGA is a great place to gain leadership skills
that will serve you well down the road!
Enjoy your summer, Cheryl

Word
of the Month
clement \KLEH-munt\ adjective
1. inclined to be merciful; lenient
2. mild
Example sentence: Alex Marsh is considered a clement
judgethe type who lets first-time offenders off
the hook and gives repeat offenders the minimum required
jail time.
Did you know? Defendants in court cases probably
dont spend much time worrying about inclement weather.
Theyre too busy hoping to meet a clement judge so
they will be granted clemency. They should hope they dont
meet an inclement judge! Clement, inclement,
and clemency all derive from the Latin clemens,
which means mild or calm. All
three terms can refer to an individuals degree of
mercy or to the relative pleasantness of the weather.

Volunteer
Enrichment
Special
THANKS . . .
. . . to all who participated in the adopt a highway clean
up last week. We were part of a state wide Clean Sweep
program, with volunteers working all across North Carolina.
We have adopted the North River Road between Webster and
Dillsboro, agreeing to pick up trash along that stretch
several times a year.
Congratulations
to Brian Gibson, who logged the most volunteer hours
during the spring 2003 semester. Working a total of 12.5
hours, Brian participated in the Adopt-a-Highway (twice),
answered phones at UNC-TV in Raleigh, and helped out at
PAWS. Together, Student Support Services students served
a grand total of 144.5 hours for the semester. Thanks to
one and all for making a difference in the life of your
community and in the lives of so many that live within it!
Upcoming
Events:
Be on the lookout for summer volunteer enrichment opportunities.
In the meantime, the Community Table in Sylva needs individual
volunteers to help serve evening meals. Call Rob if you have
a little extra time and energy over the summer. |

Look
who is in the Spotlight . . .
Ashley
Delashmit
Meet
Ashley, the SSS spotlight for May and a resident of Sylva.
Kudos to Ashley as her main academic goal will be realized
this month when she graduates from Southwestern Community
College with her Associate of Applied Science degree in
Advertising and Graphic Design. Although she would like
to eventually open her own business, Ashley hopes to work
in a graphic design firm or for an advertising agency
upon Commencement. Her future goal may see her returning
to a university for her Bachelors Degree.
There are many instructors who have been an inspiration
to this budding young graphic designer: Bob Clark, Roger
Stephens, Sarah Carothers and Ms. Barbara Frogge, to name
a few. Ashley explains, All of these individuals
challenged me to do my best and pushed me to achieve things
I ordinarily wouldnt have thought possible.
Ashleys family includes an older brother, a set
of grandparents, numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and two
cats. There are also many friends who are considered family.
But most importantly, there is a very special boyfriend
who according to Ashley is sweet and supportive.
Since she began her program at SCC, Ashley admits she
has not had much time to dabble in her other hobbies and
interests. Hopefully after Commencement, she may find
a little more time to enjoy reading, watching classic
movies, traveling and playing the piano--that is until
she lands that great job in Advertising and/or Graphic
Design!
