Message from your Director:
A huge thank you to everyone who participated in our cultural/volunteer enrichment program at UNC-TV. YOU made a difference! I hope you learned a lot, had a positive experience, and will reflect on this event later in life as an opportunity well taken.

Our cultural and volunteer enrichment programs are designed to give you "value added" experiences. Attending college is more than learning the books. Your instructors will guide you in the cognitive components of your major and assure you a well grounded understanding of the material; however, there is more to landing a job than just knowing the information. Keeping a job will require your ability to communicate with others, your ability to work in groups and your ability to seize what I call "opportunities for growth." We offer many of these growth opportunities throughout the year and I hope you choose to participate in at least one before you graduate from SCC.

Our next cultural enrichment initiative will be a leadership workshop on Friday, April 16 from 12:00-5:00. I hope all of you choose to attend. Sign up in the SSS office.

Respectfully, Cheryl

If you did not stop by the SSS office during "photo week," please stop by soon. We need your picture for our program database.

Important Cultural Enrichment Reminder for all new and
returning students:

Cultural Enrichment trips are designed to broaden your cultural and/or experiential learning. Our enrichment trips are FREE to you and we want you to participate in as many as possible. However, if you sign-up for a trip, you are expected to SHOW UP! These trips are FREE to you, but they are quite costly on your SSS Grant. If you sign-up and find out at a later date that you can not attend, you MUST give us at least 3 days notice so we can find a replacement for you. Failure to notify us will result in you "sitting out" the next 2 trips. If you have any questions, please give me a call at ext. 245.

Reminder:     You've Got Mail!

Don't Forget: Check your mailbox in the SSS office for important information, announcements, and reminders.

AND . . .

. . . while you are checking your mailbox, check-in with your SSS advisor. We want to know how things are going!

Volunteer Activities:
Thanks for participating in: the Adopt-a-Highway pick up and Bowling for Kids Sake 3/25/04!

Spring Cleaning!!! Isn't it always easier to clean someone else's mess than your own? Join us, again, Wednesday, April 14 from 2:00-5:00 (or whatever you can make) to help The Community Table get its canned goods in order and fill up some bags to give away.

In May we'll do some much needed work at the Family Resource Center in Webster… But they specifically need some help Saturday, May 22, at Kids Super Saturday at the Rec Park in Cullowhee. They will be doing a booth with hands-on activities for young children and need five people to work in two-hour shifts (that's 2 groups of 5). They would also love to have someone with a pickup truck help a little before and/or after loading and unloading stuff. Let's go and help out.

putative - \PYOO-tuh-tiv\ - adjective

Word of the Month:

1: commonly accepted or supposed *2 : assumed to exist or to have existed

Example sentence: Until scientists could identify the putative infectious agent behind the disease, which they assumed to be a virus, there was no hope of finding a cure.
Did you know? There is no putative root behind "putative"; scholars are quite certain that the word comes from the Latin word "putatus," the past participle of the verb "putare," which means "to consider" or "to think." "Putative" has been part of English since the 15th century, and it often shows up in legal contexts. For instance, a "putative marriage" is one that is believed to be legal by at least one of the parties involved. When that trusting person finds out that his or her marriage is not sanctioned by law, other "putare" derivatives, such as "dispute," "disreputable," "reputed," "imputation," and "deputy," may come into play.

                . . . Brian Gibson

Brian GibsonBrian Gibson is our spotlight for this issue of our newsletter. Brian's academic goal is to finish his double major. He is pursuing an Associate Degree in Culinary Technology and a diploma in Hotel and Restaurant Management.

When asked who at SCC has been an inspiration to him, Brian replied, "Ceretta Davis." According to Brian, "She knows what she is doing!"

A 20-year old resident of Andrews, Brian lives at home. He has a brother, Andy and two sisters, Katie and Mary. Besides attending college full time, Brian is employed by Ryan's Steak House in Sylva.

In his spare time, he enjoys traveling, exercising, and listening to rock or pop music. For all you animal lovers out there, Brian has a soft spot in his heart for cats.

One last interesting fact about Brian: he is a local celebrity. If you visit or happen to drive by Ryan's at just the right moment, you will be greeted by the restaurant's mascot-the "Ryan Cow" or as we say, the "Brian Cow." Yes, that is our very own Brian Gibson donning a bovine costume!
