Spotlight - June 2004
Welcome to summer semester 2004.
Summer
classes are more challenging - the pace, the length of time spent
in class, the reading, the writing, the lecture notes and the
homework assignments all happening within a five-week period.
My words of wisdom: get a tutor and use the Learning Assistance
Center! I am often amazed at how many of you choose not to get
academic help. Only 28% of you chose to use tutoring services
during spring semester. That is a puzzlement to me as it is free,
it is convenient and it is your academic insurance. That's it!
Consider tutoring your academic INSURANCE! Marti just ran the
spring tutoring report and we are thrilled to say 90% of the students
getting tutoring achieved a passing grade. Insure your academic
success as you would insure your home, health, car and other valuables.
Obviously, we can not guarantee there will be no loss, but we
can certainly guarantee full academic coverage to help prevent
academic loss.
I
will end with this quote by Bertha Damon, a New Hampshire Farmer:
"Getting what you go after is success, but liking it while
you are getting it is happiness."
Enjoy
your summer.

AND . . .

Take
a little time, help out, discover something new.
The
Community Table in Sylva is a place where anyone can eat and
those in need are most welcome. It is a "welcome table"
where community is created. Our good friends at The Community
Table really need volunteers to help make and serve meals through
the summer. Most of the WCU students who volunteer (a third
of the total volunteers) leave for the summer so there is a genuine
appreciation for anything we can do in the next few months. Cooking
and serving are regular needs. But they've gotten in two large
donations of food recently and have not had the time to organize
it all to make it more useful.
So,
please join me to help cook on
Monday, June 7th from 1:00 to 3:30 pm.
And help organize their pantry on
Thursday, June 10th from 2:00 to 4:00 pm.
And then we'll join them for a meal!
Call
Peter Buck at 586-4091 ext. 243 or stop by the
SSS office to sign up.
| hackneyed
- \HAK-need\ - adjective:
lacking in freshness or originality |
Example sentence: Frank's early attempts
at poetry were filled with singsong rhymes and hackneyed expressions.
Did you know? "Hackney" entered the English language
in the 14th century as a noun. Some think perhaps it came from
"Hakeneye" (now "Hackney"), the name of a
town (now a borough) in England. Others dispute this explanation,
pointing to similar forms in other European languages. The noun
"hackney," in any case, refers to a horse suitable for
ordinary riding or driving-as opposed to one used as a draft animal
or a war charger. When "hackney" was first used as a
verb in the late 16th century, it often meant "to make common
or frequent use of." Later, it meant "to make trite,
vulgar, or commonplace." The adjective "hackneyed"
began to be used in the 18th century and now is a common synonym
for "trite."

. . Amanda Ledford
Our
spotlight for June is on Amanda Ledford. Amanda finished her first
year at SCC in May. She will return this fall to continue with
her classes that will prepare her for one of the Health Science
fields. Amanda's educational goal is to apply to and be accepted
in the Physical Therapy Assistant program at the college.
One teacher at Southwestern Community College who was an inspiration
to Amanda this past year is Sandra Weden. Ms. Weden teaches English,
reading, and study skills.
On a personal note, Amanda is a resident of Bryson City and the
mother of a beautiful two-year-old girl. She enjoys playing music,
bowling, and talking. She does not like sweets, and one of her
favorite foods is liver mush! Amanda said she has always wanted
fourteen children-YES, 14! Now that is certainly "cheaper
by more than a dozen!"
If Amanda is in one of your classes or you see her around campus,
take a moment to talk with this interesting young lady. She may
share some of her stories and have you in "stitches"
in no time!
