Message from your Director:
An excellent resource is waiting for you! If you haven't heard already, SCC will be hosting a "turbo" session of classes beginning March 4. In just eight weeks, you can earn a full semester's worth of college credit. All of the turbo classes are listed on SCC's web site. Check it out and then see your SSS co-advisor to determine which classes are right for you. This is an excellent way to fast-track your education. You can register now for these classes, so don't delay, claim your seat before the class is filled.

If you have any questions, stop by the SSS office and we will direct you to the turbo offerings.

Cheryl

Important Cultural Enrichment Reminder for all new and
returning students:

Cultural Enrichment trips are designed to broaden your cultural and/or experiential learning. Our enrichment trips are FREE to you and we want you to participate in as many as possible. However, if you sign-up for a trip, you are expected to SHOW UP! These trips are FREE to you, but they are quite costly on your SSS Grant. If you sign-up and find out at a later date that you can not attend, you MUST give us at least 3 days notice so we can find a replacement for you. Failure to notify us will result in you "sitting out" the next 2 trips. If you have any questions, please give me a call at ext. 245.

Upcoming College Visitations:

March 1: WCU ~ 8:15-11:30 am or 12:45-4:00 pm
March 2: WCU ~ 8:15-11:30 am or 12:45-4:00 pm
March 4: UNCA ~ 8:30 am-1:30 pm

Volunteer Activities:
Big Brothers / Big Sisters has an annual fundraiser called Bowling for Kids' Sake. We have arranged to have an SCC evening to support this on Wednesday, March 10th from 5:00 - 7:30. We will meet in front of Balsam Center and ride over to Thunder Lanes in Sylva (next to the Roses Store). We'll be bowling by 5:30.

Individuals are asked to raise pledges totaling $35 (or more). But contact Peter if you can only raise part of this. People can register as teams of 3 to 5 or they will be put into teams. They get a T- shirt, 2 games, and light refreshments (pizza, I think).

And... It does benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters! 100% of the money raised goes to them.

Also, you are cordially invited to help us keep the North River Road clean. Thursday March 25th at 1:15 (to 3:15) we will meet at Student Support Services and drive to our stretch Adopt-a-highway. When we are done we will definitely have pizza!!!

Contact Peter at ext. 243 for more information.

immure •
\ih-MYOOR\ verb

Word of the Month:

1 a: to enclose within or as if within walls b: imprison 2: to build into a wall; especially : to entomb in a wall
Example sentence: The prince in the fairy tale visits Rapunzel, who is immured in a tower with no doors or stairs, by climbing up her long braids of hair.
Did you know? Like "mural," "immure" comes from "murus," a Latin noun that means "wall." "Immurare," a Medieval Latin verb, was formed from "murus" and the prefix "im-" (meaning "in" or "within"). "Immure," which first appeared in English in the late 16th century, literally means "to wall in" or "to enclose with a wall," but it has extended meanings as well. In addition to senses meaning "imprison" and "entomb," the word sometimes has broader applications, essentially meaning "to shut in" or "to confine." One might remark, for example, that a very studious acquaintance spends most of her time "immured in the library" or that a withdrawn teenager "immures himself in his bedroom every night."

                . . . Maleigha Elliott

Maleigha ElliottThe spotlight for our March issue of the SSS newsletter is on Maleigha Elliott. Maleigha is in the Associate of Arts, college transfer program. Graduating from Southwestern Community College is the first step toward her academic goal. After graduation she plans to enroll at a university and pursue an education in marine zoology. A career at an aquarium or working in and around the ocean is her ultimate ambition.

Maleigha has made so many friends while attending SCC that she finds it difficult to attribute any inspiration to just one person. However, she did say, "Student Support Services has introduced me to new things and new people."

A resident of Franklin, Maleigha's home includes ten, yes 10, family members! She lives with her mom, dad, older sister, middle sister and her husband, three nieces and nephews (with one more on the way), and her best friend, Liz. In addition, two family dogs round out this Elliott clan.

Maleigha works as a tutor in the winter and at Perry's Water Garden in Franklin during the summer. Some spare time enables Maleigha to indulge in many of her hobbies. Swimming, hiking, fishing, and camping are just a few of the outdoor activities she enjoys. She also loves to work with her hands, pottery being another one of her avocations.

Finally, Maleigha mentioned she would love to do something wild-diving, for example. She did not clarify whether it would be scuba diving or sky diving. However, knowing Maleigha, I believe either one would fill the bill!
