Message from your Director:
Spring has sprung and so the semester shall come to a quick end on May 6.

Graduates, thank you so very much for allowing us to be part of your SCC adventure. You bring us joy, you bring us tears, and you remind us of the difference we make. As you go forward in life, remember life is not a race. Success comes in many forms, large and small, and it is achieved through work, self and family. Treat each day as yet another opportunity to learn from the skills you acquired while studying at SCC. Remember to laugh, remember to smile, remember to use your manners, treat others like they are going to give you a million dollars. Say "I Love You" to your family members every time you leave the house. And each night, when you lay down to bed, decide what you want to accomplish tomorrow.

Thank you for choosing SCC. You honor us all.

Respectfully, Cheryl

Volunteer Activities:

Volunteering in May:

More Spring Cleaning: the Family Resource Center in Webster has need of our helping hands. There are chairs to steam clean and a few weeds to pull that will make the center look better inside and out. We'll go there Thursday May, 20 starting at 10:am and going till 2:pm. Lunch will be provided.

The FRC has also invited us to help have some fun with kids Saturday, May 22, at Kids Super Saturday (4:pm to 8:pm) at the Rec Park in Cullowhee. They will be doing a booth with hands-on activities for young children and need five people to work in two-hour shifts (that's 2 groups of 5). They would also love to have someone with a pickup truck help a little before and/or after loading and unloading stuff. Let's go and help out.

Also-Our good friends at The Community Table really need volunteers to help make and serve meals through the summer. Most of the WCU students who volunteer (a third of the total volunteers) leave for the summer so there is a genuine appreciation for anything we could do in the next few months.

Call Peter Buck at 586-4091 ext. 243.

orgulous - \OR-gyuh-luss\ - adjective:                                                          proud

Word of the Month:

Example sentence: Antoine usually worked with the boutique's most elite clientele and tended to adopt an orgulous air toward more "ordinary" customers.
Did you know? From Isles of Greece, The princes orgulous, their high blood chafed, Have . . . sent their ships . . .To ransack Troy. . . .
Thus Shakespeare began the story of the haughty princes and their revenge for the abduction of Helen in Troilus and Cressida, employing a colorful word first adopted in the 13th century from Anglo-French "orguillus." After the Bard's day, "orgulous" dropped from sight for 200 years; there is no record of its use until it was rejuvenated by the pens of Robert Southey and Sir Walter Scott in the early 1800s. Twentieth-century novelists and journalists (including James Joyce and Virginia Woolf) continued its renaissance, and today "orgulous" is an elegant choice for proud writers everywhere.

Look Who is in the Spotlight            . . . Verna Humphrey

Verna Humphrey is our student "spotlight" for this issue of the SSS newsletter. Verna lives in Whittier with her golden retriever, Sandy. She is working towards the completion of her Associate in Applied Science Degree in Human Services, Substance Abuse and Associate in Arts, College Transfer. Her ultimate educational goal is to graduate and pursue her Bachelors Degree at WCU.

Verna found encouragement from many people while in her pursuit of higher education. First and foremost is the support from her family members. They became her champions and without their confidence in her, Verna's educational adventure may not have taken place. Additionally, this journey down the path of higher learning is a "family" venture. Attending SCC along with Verna are her daughter, Patti Graham, and her granddaughter, Vickie Holzknecht. Talk about "rallying the troops!" Verna has two other granddaughters-one is a New Century Scholar in Swain County and will be attending SCC in the near future, and the other is enrolled in college in Florida.

In addition to this tremendous family support, Verna has been inspired by people at SCC. One of the first teachers who encouraged Verna was Nancie Wilson. Three years ago, Verna took her first college course, and Ms. Wilson was her instructor. "It does not matter what your age is, you can still learn!" These were Nancie's words of encouragement. Verna said, "I believed her, and I'm still in college; I'm still learning!"

A true "people" person, Verna loves the interaction with the students at SCC. She especially enjoys the company of the young adults. Verna feels that their "zest for living makes them a joy to be around."

In addition, Verna said, "The Student Support Services crew has always been there to encourage me. Thanks guys, you're the greatest!"

In a final note, Verna is a member of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society and the National Technology Honor Society. She has made the President's and Dean's list, been honored at SCC's Academic Awards Ceremony, and was Vice President of the Human Service's Club for a year. AND one more very interesting fact-Verna is 67 years young!
