Director's Message

What a wonderful time to be receiving services in the Student Support Services Program. I encourage you to take full advantage of your SSS resources which are designed to support and enhance your educational and personal experiences while at Southwestern Community College. Stop by our office as often as you want - we love visiting with you.

Your SSS program reached a ripe old age of 13 this year. We are still learning, still improving and still inspired by our potential. For those of you who are new with us, our web site will connect you to our past by offering pictures and programs of those who were here before your time. As we look to our future, we invite you to offer suggestions regarding programs and offerings. Your future will also include a new counselor in our department. Because we are committed to finding the best person for you, I also invite you to stop by and let us know what characteristics you would like to see in our new team member.

As we near the holiday season, I hope all of you are happy, healthy and take time to rejuvenate for spring semester.

Happy holidays to you!

Jamie Jones

Our Spotlight this month is on Jamie Jones. Jamie's goal is to graduate from SCC with a degree in nursing and college transfer; and be in the top ten percent of her class! Her longer term goals include obtaining a Bachelor's Degree in chemistry and then applying to medical school.

Jamie's sister was killed in a plane accident two years ago but she remains the biggest inspiration and influence in Jamie's life. Another inspiration, one from SCC, is Jamie's biology instructor, Dale Hall. Jamie said Mr. Hall helped her realize that she could do anything she set her mind to doing.

During this past summer, Jamie had the opportunity of working for the Universal Cheerleading Association (UCA). Jamie soon found herself teaching at cheerleading camps all over the state of Florida. Fortunately, Jamie was able to combine the love of a hobby, something she has done since she was four years old, the the necessity of earning an income.

Study Tips - Keys for Success

Part 12- Final Part in the Procrastication Series:
"Be REALISTIC"

NOT: I should be able to work full-time, take 5 classes, be president of SGA, spend time with my family and friends, and volunteer with a local charity 10 hours a week with no trouble at all!

INSTEAD: I have limits. I can take on fewer responsibilities and still like myself and reach my goals.

Financial Aid Applications

Cultural Enrichment

We have some wonderful Cultural Enrichment programs in line for you. Keep your eyes posted to our kiosk and to your mail. Most of the time, seating is limited as we are sorry that occasionally we are not able to take everyone who would like to attend. Please sign up early for these trips. It has been brought to our attention that some students receive mail at a much slower pace due to their living proximity to the college. The rectify this, we have decided to post CE trips at our kiosk on the day we send announcements in the mail. So, come by often. And, as a "not so friendly" reminder . . if you sign up for a CE trip, we expect you to show-up. Should you sign-up for a trip and not attend, you will be required to sit the next trip out.

Something to think about . .
There is nothing noble in being superior to some other man. The true nobility is in being superior to your previous self.
