Happy New Year,

I want to know if you made a New Year’s resolution? Did your New Year’s resolution have anything to do with your future career? If so . . . perfect! If not, please consider the following excerpt taken from 100 Things Every College Student Ought to Know, ". . . that your resume is a distant chore waiting to be filled out, but it gets filled with only things that are going to make you look good. It helps to be able to plan some of those good-looking items. When you begin applying for real jobs, your resume is the device that shows how serious you are and what a good addition you would be to the interviewing organization. Besides good grades and references from faculty members who actually know you, try to have experiences in the resume that help you stand out from the rest of the crowd. Internships and tutoring are excellent items to be able to list. Internships will give you actual experience in the field enabling you to learn more about what actually happens. Tutoring jobs are not only the best way to earn money and keep on top of your field, they also look great on a resume.”

In addition to the above experiences, a college work-study job is a very valuable tool. College work-study provides you with an opportunity to connect with professional people who often serve as wonderful references.

If you have any questions about planning and building your resume, it is not too soon to start, stop by the SSS office for additional tools.

Let’s all have a great spring semester!

A Word from Peter:

For the Holidays let us consider Mark Twain's timeless "Advice to Good Little Boys":

"You ought never to take anything that don't belong to you—if you can’t carry it off.

If you unthinkingly set up a tack in another boy’s seat, you ought never to laugh when he sits down on it—unless you can’t help it.

Good little boys must never tell a lie when the truth will answer just as well. In fact, real good little boys will never tell lies at all—not at all—except in cases of the most urgent necessity.

It is wrong to put a sheepskin under your shirt when you know you are going to get a licking. It is better to retire swiftly to some secret place and weep over your bad conduct until the storm blows over.

You should never do anything wicked and then lay it on your brother, when it is just as convenient to lay it on some other boy.

You ought never to knock your little sister down with a club. It is better to use a cat, which is soft. In doing this you must be careful to take the cat by the tail, in such a manner that she cannot scratch you.

And as Tiny Tim said, “God bless us every one!”
