Director's Message
The most rewarding component of my job is the contact I have with you. When I was in high school, one of my teachers gave an award to a fellow classmate. At the time of the award the teacher stood up and said something to this nature, "I want to recognize this student because he has brought so many gifts (not material gifts) to me . . . he has educated me about his family, his life, his dreams and has allowed me to be a part of his experiences beyond the classroom . . . he has truly helped re-define education for me." It took me awhile to accept why this one student stood out above all of the rest of us. I understand CLEARLY today what my former teacher was talking about. As much as I was a great student, as were many, many others in the class, I did not go the extra mile to visit with this teacher beyond the classroom. I did not engage her in anything but academics.

Many of you are deserving of similar awards. You have included me in your lives beyond the classroom...thank you! Your conversations with me help me do my job better . . . if I know your needs, I am better able to serve you. Side note: Obviously, my former high school teacher had the opinion that "You can not teach the student unless you know the student." That, in a nut shell, is one of the foundations to the Community College Mission . . . small classrooms, so you are not merely a number. I love talking with you about your academics, your dreams, your work, your families. I, like my former high school teacher, would like to recognize a student who has recently provided me with a new definition of education. Johnny Jaimez is my North Star. He shines so bright and is so strong emotionally, academically, spiritually and personally. I love visiting with Johnnie!!! His smile is contagious and he has a positive outlook on life. Thank you Johnnie for sharing your life with me. You are an exceptional person!

There are a lot of stars in the sky. Does a star have your name on it? Think to yourself, "Who have you included in your life here at SCC beyond the classroom?" If you can't think of anyone, please take some time to get to know us. Everyone at SCC cares about your success, your SSS team, your faculty, your staff and your administration. We truly are here for you!

Here's to you, Cheryl~

Yet Another Column With Occasionally Useful Advice by Peter Buck
Hurry Sickness: When I was in college I spent more of my time worrying about getting things done than I did in actually doing them. I have felt hurried most of my life. Recently I decided that "hurry" is not a scheduling problem but a state of mind problem. If my thoughts are centered around what I have to do and how little time I have to do it, I am hurried. If my thoughts are centered around being in the present moment, I am not hurried.

To be in the present moment, one needs to be aware of one's priority task and to do one's best. To be in the present moment it is helpful to admit that one's "best" changes with: energy level; level of mental clarity; emotional state. What one has "now" is what one has . . . one does with it what one can.

It is really unpleasant to pretend that we have to have more time or energy than is here. Let's save our sense of hurry or urgency for those emergencies that require immediate action. School semesters do not qualify; life and death issues do. Admittedly, not every "now" is immediately likeable, but every "now" is something we can involve ourselves with. And once we get involved the situation gives us some energy to be present and deal with it. As for the "nows" that are likable, we can enjoy them more than ever. We don't have to be worried about when they will end or what will come next. - It's working for me, I hope prioritizing and doing your best in the now will work for you too.
