Director's Message

And the semester ends. For those of you graduating, congratulations! For those of you who will be with us next year, Tonya, Marti, Peter, Laurie and I look forward to serving you again.

Graduation is an interesting word. Its tone suggests completion, the end, farewell, it's OVER!!!! The dictionary defines graduation, "completing a course of study." I suspect that many of you (like me upon my graduation) are thinking "Why is this over so soon? Am I prepared to go into the workforce? Do I know everything I need to know to make me an effective employee? Will I be an effective employee?" And the answers are "Because time flies when you are having fun, yes, yes, and if you choose to be!"

What is so interesting about graduation, to me, is that it represents more of a beginning than an end. I truly believe your real "course of study" is just around the corner when you land your first degree associated job. Applying the wonderful skills you have learned will be your new challenge and, as an SCC graduate, our communities welcome your vast knowledge with open arms. You have the knowledge but now comes your part, the application of the knowledge. I wish you all wonderful successes. Be kind to each other, treat those around you with respect, use your knowledge to better the organization, think before you speak, and never make promises that you can't keep!

Please, stay in touch with us. We enjoy hearing from you.

I can hear the pomp and circumstance. Can you???

Cheryl

Yet Another Column With Occasionally Useful Advice - by Peter Buck

Plan for Imperfection and live well: Cars break down, baby sitters get sick, computer programs that we need urgently won't install properly. If you have had anything to do with SSS you've heard that it is wise to plan for when things go wrong. But having such a "recovery plan" has implications not just for school but also for work and relationships. A plan can help us communicate honestly when we most need to. When we are trapped in having things always go well, we will cover things up or get overwhelmed when they don't. This doesn't help and it's no fun. - Instead let's start noticing when things don't go well rather than pretending that "it will never happen again." With a plan we can establish steps to take and who can help us out the next time. We can set limits and decide when to call things off. We can do all this without having to feel stressed or wrong. We're just doing the next thing that needs to be done. And, by the way, the people we work with and relate to will be more honest and easy with us if they know we are into recovering rather than catastrophe. Could it be that recovery planning is a condition of honesty and happiness?

And do come see us if you want some help making a plan.

Reward Yourself!

Not: I can't take any time out until I'm completely finished.
Instead: I spent an hour working. Now I'll take 10 minutes for myself.
