Southwestern Community College

A Farewell Message from Tonya

Dear SSS participants,

This is a farewell letter. Yes, I am leaving you fine group of students to pursue other adventures in the Pacific Northwest. Because of the connections that I have made with you, my quests will include beginning a Student Support Services program at another community college. I will start my new job at Mount Hood Community College in Gresham, Oregon on November 13th. Having witnessed the enormous benefits that SSS has the capacity to offer its participants, I am extremely pleased to have the opportunity to continue in the development and implementation of a new TRIO program.

Don't think for a second that my concern for each of you will leave with my departure. On the contrary, I will be following your progress from afar. I intend to continue monitoring your progress in achieving the academic goals you set for yourself at SCC. The three hour time difference will perhaps delay me, but it certainly won't put an end to my desire to know that you are realizing your dreams. Knowing you has truly been a gift for me....a chance to learn that no matter what may get in the way of achieving our goals, we each have our own source of inner strengths, that when called upon, provide us with the resiliency necessary to keep going and go well.

And with all that said.....Adios!
Tonya

Elly Winstead

This month's spotlight is on Elly Winstead. Elly is currently pursuing her Associate in Arts degree (College Transfer) here at SCC. Her goal is to transfer to the Technology Institute of Fashion Design in New York City, New York and obtain a Bachelors Degree in Fashion/Costume Design.

Elly's hobies and interests include video games, web/costume design, Japanese entertainment and culture, art, comics, modeling and crossword puzzles. She has traveled all over the country competing in her costumes. On several occassions she has won awards. Elly said she could not have done this without the support of her friends.

When asked to list someone at SCC who has been an inspiration to her, Elly named Ms. Karen Crupi. Ms. Crupi was a part-time instructor at SCC before moving out of state. Elly said that Ms. Crupi helped to create an interest for her in Art History and "she proved that it couldn't all be boring." Elly got a lot of fashion ideas from the art Ms. Crupi presented to her class.

Study Tips - Keys for Success

Part 11-- Procrastination Series:
"Look at What You Have Accomplished"

NOT: I have hardly made a dent in all there is to do!

Instead: I have reviewed my lecture notes and read 3 chapters. That won't guarantee me an "A", but it is more than I did yesterday.
